Disney has confirmed development on several animated sequels in recent weeks, including titles like Frozen 3, Zootopia 2, and even Toy Story 5.

In the same wave of announcements, megastar Dwayne Johnson announced that “a live-action reimagining of Moana is in the works,” as Disney takes another stab at the 2016 hit musical. It will be produced by Johnson’s company Seven Bucks Productions and Moana’s voice actress, Auli’i Cravalho, is also on board as an executive producer.

And with so many more animated films in the works under Disney’s watch, many are already wondering if a sequel to Johnson’s earlier efforts with House of Mouse is in the works.
There are currently no official plans for a Moana 2 animated film in development for a theatrical release.
However, in January 2022, Disney confirmed that a Moana sequel was in the works for release on Disney+. This will continue the story of the young heroine under the guidance of director David G. Derrick Jr., who joined the Disney team with his work on the original Moana in 2016.
Rumors suggest that a theatrical sequel to the Moana story has been scrapped in favor of Dwayne Johnson’s reimagining of the original film, though this has yet to be officially confirmed by Disney.

With no indication that Moana 2 is officially in the works, it’s pretty safe to say that this sequel won’t be one of Disney’s 2023 releases.
Animated films require years of preparation and development, and Disney almost always announces its plans for films well in advance of their release. Given that it’s already been four months into the year, there’s slim chance Moana 2 will hit theaters before the end of 2023, hovering anywhere near the “nobody” side of that spectrum.

For the most part, Disney simply uses number titles for their animated sequels, as seen recently with the aforementioned Frozen, Zootopia, and Toy Story movies. But if Disney decides to veer off that path for Moana 2, there are a few different options.
How To Watch Moana: Reviewed
While something like “The Way of Water” might work with Moana’s deep connection to the ocean, Disney will certainly avoid duplicating such a title after the massive success of Avatar: The Way of Water.
One of the songs from the first film, such as “How Far I’ll Go” or “We Know The Way”, may serve as inspiration for the title, but that will all depend on the plot details of the sequel. At this point, Moana 2 would seemingly be the most likely choice for the title, though Disney could absolutely turn things around once the sequel is officially on the table.
Moana pitted the titular heroine against the powerful lava-based villain Te Ka, who was ultimately revealed to be the goddess Motonui Te Fiti when Maui returned her heart. Now that the island has regained peace and Maui is on her next mission, there are more than a few possibilities as to who could be the next villain in Moana 2.
Disney could introduce another mythical being similar to Te Fiti, with ties to Maui or hidden away in a place Moana explores on her driving journey. The sequel could also boil things down to a simpler narrative and have the antagonists be an invading warrior tribe or even another country that invades the land of Motonui after hearing of the nation’s rebirth.

This movie will also likely be set a few years after the original Moana in terms of timeline, giving the Motonuian boss’s daughter many more challenges to face as she becomes an adult.
Considering how 2016’s Moana ended, it would be a shock not to see Auli’i Cravalho’s heroine reunite with Dwayne Johnson’s “shape-shifter, demigod of wind and sea, and hero to men,” Maui. The Rock’s mighty hero starred in the original film, and since he’s already producing and starring in the live-action film, his inclusion in Moana 2 is almost a guarantee.
At the end of the first film, Maui was seen flying alongside Moana and her people over the ocean in her giant falcon form as Moana showed her people the ways of the discoverer.
While she may not be with the young Motonui leader at the start of a potential sequel, their paths will almost certainly cross once her next journey is underway.

Along with Moana’s character development in the first film, Dwayne Johnson’s Maui embarked on her own journey of self-discovery as she finds her magical hook and regains her powers. Much of the story also saw him change in person, leaving Moana in the dust on her abandoned island to fully support her in the battle against Te Ka.
Barring wild surprises and barring a few minor skirmishes, fans are hoping the relationship between Maui and Moana is solid going into their next matchup. An exception to this idea might be if Moana feels like Maui has abandoned her if there’s a prolonged separation between them, but seeing them bond at the end of the first film seemed to set them up for a solid bond moving forward.
With the aforementioned Moana Disney+ series confirmed for early 2023, the project is likely in the early stages of development right now.
While the voice-over work won’t take long, Disney will be looking to ensure that the animation for this new streaming show is top-notch over the next few months.
