Picking up where Spider-Man: No Way Home Home left off, the sequel to Doctor Strange reveals a series of visually stunning and nightmarish scenes. Could we be facing the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) horror film? Director Sam Raimi certainly has pedigree: As the man behind the Evil Dead trilogy, he also directed The Gift and Drag Me To Hell, and orchestrated that terrifying hospital sequence in Spider-Man 2.

In The Multiverse of Madness, the Sorcerer Supreme (Benedict Cumberbatch) must reckon with the manipulation of his multiverse as multiple dimensions collapse into one another. Searching for fugitive Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), Strange must confront his demonic alter ego (an obvious reference to Marvel’s What If?), while his close ally Wong (Benedict Wong) warns him of the consequences

The sequel also raises a latent thread of tension between Strange and his former ally Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), as Mordo tests Strangeon for his dangerous experiments. With some pleasantly macabre visuals (watch out for Strange’s face becoming the equivalent of a Rubik’s Cube) and plenty of fan-friendly nods (Gargantos, the sea monster ravaging New York), this could be a spectacular extension of Marvel’s Phase Four. We also eagerly await the arrival of America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), who should play a major role in our understanding of the multiverse.
The movie may be called No, but when it comes to director Jordan Peele and horror, our reaction is a definite yes. The Oscar-winning director of Get Out and Us is back with his new chiller with a mysterious and intriguing look, the trailer of which gives away everything and nothing. Now, this is how it should be done. Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya teams up with Hustlers’ KeKe Palmer and Minari’s Steven Yeun for a story about… something. The brilliantly designed teaser hints at an obvious alien threat, and in the trailer we get strong tones from Spielberg (Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and Shyamalan (Signs).
However, such is the strength of Peele’s personality that Nope must have its own darkly ironic and deeply creepy touch. The trailer delves into Hollywood’s history of whitewashing before appearing to criticize small-town cowboy culture, the potentially fleshy foothills foreshadowing the arrival of a dark cloud with flags hanging from the end. Some have speculated that the film is based on the legend of the Skinwalker Ranch, an old Navajo reservation known to be hotbed of UFO activity. If that’s true, then that’s Peele in a nutshell, bringing together both controversial racial history and supernatural menace in one fell swoop.
Speed meets Magic Mike meets Romancing the Stone in this silly-looking buddy comedy. Sandra Bullock teams up with Channing Tatum in the story of an author and her aerial cover model who run into trouble in the jungle. When Bullock’s character Loretta is kidnapped by villainous billionaire Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe), chaos ensues. There is also a cameo by Brad Pitt in this action comedy, which comes from the pen of Horrible Bosses creator Seth Gordon.

In 2020, the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie did justice to the Sega gaming icon. Voiced by Ben Schwartz, Sonic’s brashness and quick ring-collecting skills made it to the big screen intact. However, the show was stolen by Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik, although we didn’t see Carrey in the classic suit and mustache until the end of the film.
The good news: Carrey continues the look for the sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which once again pits Sonic and his nemesis Robotnik against each other. James Marsden also returns, and Idris Elba is on hand to voice the iconic echidna known as Knuckles. The first Sonic movie was a huge hit at the box office and was hailed as the rare video game-to-film adaptation that works. Can Sonic 2 do the same trick?
The master of mayhem, Michael Bay, turns on the blue light and races through lower Los Angeles in this typically cooked-up thriller. The ever-versatile Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a career criminal who hijacks an ambulance after a robbery gone wrong. Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul Mateen II plays Gyllenhaal’s younger brother, a war veteran who reluctantly finds himself embroiled in the ensuing chaos. Hobbs & Shaw’s Eiza Gonzalez also stars in a film that promises all the familiar Bay-isms: shaky cam, sweaty intensity and plenty of shots.
