A general rule about horror sequels: they rarely improve on the original. That’s what makes “Ouija: Origin of Evil” so amazing. It’s better than 2014’s “Ouija” in every department. In other words, think of it as “The Godfather: Part II” of horror movies.

Technically, the new film is actually a prequel, set in 1967. It’s the first thing director and co-writer Mike Flanagan (“Oculus”) has done right. The atmospheric film carefully recreates the time, down to the vintage board game boxes and the smoke billowing in the intimate restaurant air. You’d expect this kind of attention to detail from an episode of “Mad Men,” not a low-budget thriller.

Speaking of “Mad Men,” Elizabeth Reiser, who was one of Don Draper’s obsessions in the show’s final season, injects a refreshing zest into her role as Alice, a widowed mother with two daughters. Lena (Annalise Basso) is going through some mild teenage rebellion and Doris (Lulu Wilson) is a normal 9-year-old, but the death of her father has left her unhealthy and vulnerable. He has a hard time making friends and is often teased by schoolmates.

If anything, the film’s third act is the only slightly disappointing aspect. The plot is carefully constructed, the performances are rich (both girls are excellent), the characters are believable and the fear grows all the time.
