The film tells the autobiographical story of Danish author Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep, ) and her time on a coffee plantation in East Africa in the early 20th century. In the film, Blixen marries Swedish baron Brør Blixen-Fineck (Klass Maria Brandauer) and travels with him to Africa. The marriage is unhappy because he is a womanizing man who eventually leaves her to run the plantation alone. A baroness meets a hunter/adventurer (Robert Redford) and they begin a strange romance.
Based on the autobiographical book “Out of Africa” by Issac Dinesen (Karen’s pen name) published in 1937, his book Shadows of the Bull and additional material from other sources. The book was written by author Kurt Lüttke and filmed in 1984. The idea of adapting Dineson’s memoir to the big screen had been floating around for decades before Universal Studios finally picked up the project. Both Orson Welles and David Lean considered producing the film, but Universal eventually gave the project to Sidney Pollock to produce and direct the film in the 1980s.
“Out of Africa” was shot on location in Africa using descendants of the Kikuyu tribe named in the book, including Chief Kinyanju’s grandson, who played his own grandfather. Much of it was shot outside Nairobi in Langada, near the real Nakang Mountains.
Streep and Pollock met frequently during the 6-month shoot in Kenya, especially for Blixen’s voice. Streep spent a lot of time listening to Blixen’s tapes and began speaking in an archaic and aristocratic manner, which Pollock felt was excessive. Streep, however, credited Pollock for saving the cast from all the major logistical problems and said she made the film a magical experience.

The production was not without problems. The country was in the midst of a drought during filming, and the crew had to consider moving elsewhere; As they tried to decide where to go, the rain came. Many of the crew suffered from malaria, and filming the animals in the bush presented its own special problems. It was illegal to touch or handle wild animals, so the crew had to wait hours for each shot to get the animals in the right spot.
At the time of filming, Karen’s actual farmhouse was part of the local nursing school, so filming took place at her nearby first home in Mbogan. Her original home, known as Mbagathi, is now the Karen Blixen Museum. Much of the filming took place in a re-creation of 1910s Nairobi, built in an uninhabited area of Langada.
