Phakeng Named As New Chancellor Of University Of Free State – The Senate of the University of Cape Town, the academic body, on Wednesday approved two motions supporting the University Council’s call for an independent investigation into Professor Mamoukgithi Phakeng, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, and Council President Babalwa Ngonyama.
In addition, the Senate passed a motion asking the House to include his gaffes in the ruling as part of the investigation. The council is yet to announce a five-member panel, headed by a retired judge, to investigate the conduct of senior UCT leaders.

The proposals were approved at the Senate session on Wednesday afternoon. The first proposal supports the decision of the Council at the session of October 15 to appoint an independent commission. The Senate demanded that all parties stop attacking each other through media leaks.

According to university sources, the key proposal was to invite the council to join the inquiry’s terms of reference.
This came after a deep governance crisis in the council that saw Faking and Ngonyama withdraw from the process and council vice president Philadi Gwangwa accused of conflict of interest for refusing to recuse himself from considering an independent investigation.
The investigation focuses on conflicting reasons for the early departure of Associate Professor Les Lang, the university’s former vice-chancellor for teaching and learning.
Ngonyama told the Senate that Lange resigned for personal reasons, while Lange said in the letter that she was forced to after Faking made it clear, through Ngonyama, that he did not want her to continue in the position.

On Monday, EXO’s Executive Committee failed to appoint an independent commission after a “disastrous” meeting. This led to another special council meeting being held in a week’s time.
At the center of Monday’s failed Security Council meeting was Gwanghwa’s steadfast refusal to exclude herself from the process, after some council members and the academic union accused her of a conflict of interest.
The Academic Union, the body representing UCT staff, sent a scathing letter from lawyers to the board, asking them to take immediate disciplinary action against Gwangwa.

UCT spokesman Elijah Moholola said on Wednesday the university remained “fully focused and committed to the process of establishing a five-member independent panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding [Lange’s] departure, as well as matters relating to executive relationships and resignations within and outside the executive team of the UCT management.”
On Wednesday, former UCT vice-chancellor Max Price and former council president Sipho Pityana called Lang a “fantastic match” in the Mail & Guardian.
