My background is as a kindergarten teacher, but I have been a Sunday school teacher for many years.
I have included a short, child-friendly summary (that I personally wrote) of the biblical description of the Book of Esther. I hope you find this useful! If you don’t need the story summary, you can scroll down to the printable Esther coloring page at the bottom if you want.
King Xerxes of Persia had a great celebration. He invited all the princes and nobles of the provinces. For 180 days he displayed the great wealth of his kingdom. Then he organized a party which lasted 7 days. King Xerxes ordered his wife, Queen Vashti, to appear before everyone who wore her crown so that she could show off her beauty.
His advisors told him that he should take her place and make someone else queen, otherwise all women would think it was okay to disobey their husbands. The king agreed and declared that women should respect their husbands.

The search for a new queen for King Xerxes began. All the beautiful young women of the neighborhood were brought to the palace.
Among them was Esther. She was beautiful and won the favor of everyone who saw her. Esther grew up with her parent Mordecai. He took her as his daughter after the death of his parents. Mordecai stayed at the palace every day and checked on Esther.
King Xerxes was fascinated by Esther. He declared that Esther would be his wife. So he placed the royal crown on her head and made her queen in place of Vashti. Someone close to Esther Mordechai told her not to tell anyone she was Jewish. So Esther did not reveal this to the king.
One day Mordecai overheard two guards plotting to kill the king. He spoke to Esther who reported this to the king (honoring Mordecai). There was an investigation and the plot was proven true. The guards were arrested, but the king forgot to reward Mordecai.
Queen Esther And Mordecai Coloring Page
One of the king’s advisors, Haman, is angry with Mordecai because he will not bow to him. Haman was so angry that he not only wanted to kill Mordecai, but also all the Jews.
Haman deceitfully advised the king to get rid of Mordecai and the Jews because they were not acting according to the king’s laws.
When Mordecai heard of the king’s order to destroy the Jews, he put on sackcloth and wailed loudly. Queen Esther heard about Mordecai and sent one of her companions to find out why he was upset.
Mordecai told Esther about the plan to kill the Jews and told her that she had to speak to the king. He told her that she could have become queen for a while.

Queen Esther asked Mordecai and the Jewish people to fast for 3 days with her and her companions. She would then approach the king, even if she risked being killed for it.
On the third day, Esther put on her royal garments and stood before the king’s hall. When the king saw Esther, he was happy and handed her his scepter so that she could come closer to him.
Esther asked the king and Mahaman to come to the party. At the party, she asks the king and Mahaman to come to a second party.
That night, the king could not sleep and therefore asked to read the records of his reign. He learned how Mordecai had saved his life. He asked what had been done to repay Mordechai and found that nothing had been done.
Book Of Esther
Haman was in the inner courtyard and the king called him and asked him how he should reward someone he wanted to honor. Haman assumed the king wanted to honor him. So he told the king that he should put a royal robe on the man and let him ride on the king’s horse and ride him like a noble prince through the city proclaiming “This is what we do for the man whom the king loves to honor!”
On Esther’s second feast, she told the king that she had said: “If I please you, Your Majesty, and if it pleases you, give me my life – this is my request.” And spare my people – that is my request. » She told King Xerxes of Haman’s plot to kill the Jews.
The king sentenced Haman to death. The Jews defend themselves triumphantly against the attackers and Mordecai becomes second only to the king.
I hope this summary was useful to you. This is a child-friendly version – no skewers are mentioned. For the full graphic story you can check out the Book of Esther.
