Run Baby Run By Nicky Cruz – Mau Maus is the name of a gang from the 1950s in New York City. The book and film adaptation The Cross and Switchblade and the biography Run Baby Run document the life of its most famous director Nicky Cruz. Their name comes from the Mau Mau Rebellion in Kya.
Nicky Cruz wrote a book about her experiences called Run Baby Run. Israel Narvaez pledged his life to God and wrote a book called Second Chance: The Story of Israel Narvaez. David Wilkerson wrote the biography The Cross and the Switchblade and the film of the same name was released.

The Mau Maus were a Brooklyn Puerto Rican gang that operated from 1957 to about 1962. Some members of an outside group known as the Apaches broke away and formed the Mau Maus, according to Israel Narvaez, one of the founders of the group. The Apaches were addicted to heroin while Narvaez and others were interested in fighting and keeping the land clean. They also sought permission from a rival group called the Chaplains to start a Puerto Rican community in the area. The group eventually became known as the Mau Mau Seaplans.

A study published in 2018 found that the gang was founded in 1957 by a young Puerto Rican who lived in the Fort Green Housing Project in Brooklyn, New York. The youth began by approaching the first local group, the Chaplains, to discuss the idea of a new group. They were supported by Earl Tooley, the chief Chaplain, and the new group was first called the Mau Mau Chaplains before becoming just the Mau Mau. The main characters are Juan Seda as the President, Israel Narvaez as the Vice President and Carlos Reyes as the Warlord. The name Mau Maus was chosen after members watched the film Something of Value (released in May 1957 in the United States) about the Mau Mau rebellion in East Africa.
Around January 1958 a member of Bishop’s gang and the owner of a candy shop was stabbed to death by some Mau Mau gangs, apparently in revenge for Bishop’s killing of Mannie Durango, a member of the Mau Maus. One of the most famous members is Nicky Cruz, who served as President, Vice President, and Warlord at various times in his life. Cruz said he stabbed 16 people while he was a member.
Cruz and his good friend Israel Narvaez became Christians in July 1958, after hearing David Wilkerson preach. However, Narvaez was not satisfied with Christianity and eventually joined the Mau Maus. He became their leader again and on February 23, 1959, Narvaez, along with Carl Cintron, Carlos Reyes, and Melvin Torres, killed Anthony Lavonchino, a member of the Sand Street Angels, one of the Mau Maus Emies. Lavonchino is about to beat Tico, Mau Mau, to walk with his sister. Narvaez later returned to his Christian faith as documented in his autobiography, Second Chance.
Later took another group called Vampires, responsible for a famous tragedy in New York, in which they killed two innocent people, who were mistaken for gang members, in the evening of August 29, 1959 competition. The murders would become known as the Capeman Murders after the costume worn on the Broadway musical Agrón and Paul Simon’s The Capeman based on Agrón’s life. Cruz’s classic testimony is still a powerful read more than forty years after its first publication. A haunted childhood in his Puerto Rican home before a tough and violent youth as the leader of one of New York’s toughest street gangs. Chilling scenes of knife fights, torture and murder affect the life of a young man who is outwardly proud and fearful, but inwardly running with fear.
His fear and loneliness were brought to the surface by an encounter with the events of the character of the preacher David Wilkerson, who led Cruz to open his life to Christ – a surprising turn that surprised everyone who knew him.
Soul Obsession By Nicky Cruz
Born one of 18 children to Puerto Rican parents, Nicky suffered physical and mental abuse as a child. When he was 15 years old, his father sent him to visit his brother in New York. But Nicky didn’t stay long with his brother, instead he chose to do it alone.
By the time he was 16 years old, he had become one of the most popular street gangs in Brooklyn called the Mau Maus. Within six months, he became their president and fearlessly ruled the streets as a warrior of one of the groups feared by the military and the police. Lost in a cycle of drugs, alcohol, and brutal violence, his life takes a turn for the worse after a friend and fellow gang member brutally stabs and beats him to death. Nicky.
As Cruz’s fame grew, so did his nightmares. Arrested several times, the court’s forensic therapist described Nicky’s fate as “going to prison, the chair of fire, and hell.”
No one could reach Cruz until he met a black street preacher named David Wilkerson. It destroys Nicky – showing him something he never knew before: unconditional love. He had a continuing crush on the young man. Nicky hits him, spits on him and, once, puts his life in great danger, but God’s love is there – stronger than any enemy Nicky has met.
Run, Baby, Run By Nicky Cruz
Finally, Wilkerson’s presentation of the gospel message and the love of Jesus melts the thick walls of Nicky’s heart. You receive forgiveness, love and new life that can only come through Jesus. Since then, he has dedicated that life to helping others find the same freedom.
In the forty years that have passed since he came to Christ, Nicky Cruz has been a minister around the world, speaking to vulnerable people in all walks of life. He has reached out to thousands of gang members in the city as he speaks of their need from his own experience.
