Spanning more than three decades through multiple season renewals, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has grown as a franchise since its inception, first to over 3.9 million viewers with its series 2012 hosted by Nickelodeon. In the past TMNT rebooted the characters of the ninja turtles as a crime fighting group, the new series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rise of the TMNT, takes us to a time before the need of our killer doves are sin fighters. Whether it’s your first time with the series or you just want to brush up before it starts again, we’ll cover the history of our favorite TMNT characters and dive into the new series’ twists without spoilers !
Named after the Renaissance master, Leonardo da Vinci, Leonardo is the eldest and leader of the TMNT characters. Leonardo is the heaviest and oldest of the four brothers. He has a strong bond with the brothers’ foster father, Splinter, due to his ability to learn the ninja arts.
As the leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo is the younger brother who brings everyone together through the franchise’s good times and bad times. His leadership role is also very stressful. A natural development stage for Leonardo is working with his best side and accepting his flaws and weaknesses. And even though Leonardo is the head honcho, he still has his big brother-like moments, like hanging out with his siblings.

The technical expert of the group, Donatello supports the ninja turtles with his knowledge and skills. It is named after a Renaissance sculptor who created a new type of sculpture based on Italian carving techniques. Donatello’s first weapon is a bō staff and wears a purple mask. He is the most technologically savvy of the brothers, and the most educated – in the 2003 series he received his university degree by mail. Although he has the most intelligence of all the siblings, he also shows a great ability to get along with people, and says that he prefers to be a simple turtle sometimes.
In addition to his books, Donatello is known to be the kindest of the brothers and enjoys being with most of the characters in each series. Although he doesn’t instigate fights with his brothers, he sometimes loses his cool when the other ninja turtles don’t understand his explanations for his creations, and sometimes his brothers fight him despite the younger brother
The comic relief of the team, Michelangelo’s favorite weapon is a pair of nunchucks, and he stands out from other TMNT characters with his orange face. Named after the famous artist of the statue of David and the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo is the quiet, happy-go-lucky younger brother who frequently references pop culture staples like Star Wars. If you’re more familiar with the 1987 or 2003 series, his defining characteristic is his love of pizza and yelling California surfer slang in the middle of a battle like “cowabunga.”
Although Michelangelo’s actions sometimes angered his older siblings or adoptive father, it complemented his social background and resulted in his positive outlook on life as a mutant. In the end he is a very good person who tries to support his brothers with his humor and gentleness.

Raphael is the only turtle to wear a red mask for all appearances in the series, Raphael is the leader of the group and is named after the High Renaissance Vatican Painter. His main weapons are double sai. Raphael often rejects his brothers, especially Michelangelo. In some episodes, such as the 2012 series, Raphael has a love-hate relationship with his older brother, Leonardo, who often clashes with Leonardo over his role as the leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
However, despite his aggressive side, Raphael is constantly developed in each series of the franchise as someone who can be criticized for his quick temper and learns to deal with his other climactic moments. He is also very concerned about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and is usually the first of the brothers to react when one of the members of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is about to get hurt and is in serious trouble. or
Splinter is the foster father and teacher of the younger Turtles, who is described as a humanoid, bipedal mouse. A true ninjutsu master, he imparted his knowledge of the art to the brothers after adopting them. How he learned ninjutsu depends on the series: in some series, Splinter is a mouse belonging to the ninjutsu master Hamato Yoshi, and he knows how to copy his master’s moves. In other series, Splinter was Hamato Yoshi himself but turned into a rat after coming into contact with the ninja turtles.
Regardless of the series, Splinter has many roles as a father, martial arts instructor, and mentor to the turtles. As he manages their lives and takes great care of them, Splinter sends the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to challenge them to sharpen their artistic skills.

April O’Neil plays a similar role as an elder or adoptive mother to the TMNT team. In the 2003 series, April gets along well with Donatello, whose supporting role is more than academic.
A vigilante who fights crime with DIY weapons, a friend of Casey Jones, or an aggressive member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gang. His main enemy is the leader of the Purple Dragons-Hun group. In most people, but in 1987, he developed a friendship with Raphael because of their similarities and differences.
