This has now been replaced by OOP, an unlimited disc version that drops the DVD extra disc, but you can still track down the 2-disc version on sites like eBay. Both releases look almost identical, but the limited edition has a green band that runs across the top of the front cover with the words Limited Edition – which includes the DVD’s special features. Definition 4K UHD Version Although at the time of writing, 4K is still relatively new, and the selection is limited, this segment will expand in the future. The only 4K version currently available worldwide is the 2018 US Region A/1 Lions Gate Home Entertainment 4K UHD release. This release has two features/issues that buyers should be aware of The first is that although 4K Blu-ray has four times the pixel resolution, there is no more detail than the previous 2010 US Anchor Bay Limited Blu-ray version. It is not known whether this output has increased or reached the quality limit of 16mm film. In some images, features such as saturation, levels and contrast are preferred over older Blu-rays. Additionally, this version contains all the fixes and corrections described above, so the actual presentation of the untouched and unedited theatrical version has yet to be officially released. Definitive DVD Editions There is no definitive DVD release of The Evil Dead yet, they all have their pros and cons depending on what you do best. The film is generally available in two formats; 1:37:1 open matte full screen, and 1.85:1 matte widescreen. (you can read more below) Best extras: If you’re looking for an extra set, get the Anchor Bay 2003 UK R2 Evil Dead Trilogy box set, which has more movies in both open and matte formats and on two discs, or the Anchor Bay 2007 The US R1 Ultimate Edition spans three discs with both formats of the film and extras On balance, the Ultimate Edition comes out on top, though each edition has something special, so both are worth owning. The full screen version on the UK box set is the same transfer used on the previous DVD releases of Anchor Bay Pictures 1-5, and has the Cheryl zoom tweak, but the lightning has been moved backwards. Both the widescreen version, and the fullscreen version in the Ultimate version are almost identical, and the seamless version. Picture quality isn’t as sharp or clear as the Elite DVD, and it suffers from too-high contrast that bleeds red colors onto the screen, which is especially noticeable compared to the Elite transfer. The difference is really visible here on the title screen 1985 Jap Herald Videogram LD -Vs- 1999 US R1 Elite SE DVD 1999 US R1 Elite Special Ed. -Vs- 2007 US R1 Anchor By Alt Ed Pure Transfer: By this I mean the closest transfer of the film to the original theatrical release without any visual or audio adjustments or changes. The best version, if you don’t mind getting fanmade stuff, is the Fanmade Book DVD. This release is a restored version of the 1.33:1 open matte transfer taken on 2010 US Anchor Bay Limited Edition Blu-ray, which was arguably the best retail transfer of The Evil Dead (although the 1985 Japanese Herald Videogram Laserdisc. A second) has two key points: What sets the edition apart from all other DVDs; Its color time, and its image frame It’s worth noting that although there are different DVD releases of Evil Dead, they are all similar in terms of color timing and image quality. The color spectrum on Blu-ray is greener and cooler than the warmer Elite or Anchor Bay DVDs, and their white balances appear pinker in places. This subtle cool transition seems to change the entire ‘feel’ of the film and makes the film seem even more terrifying because of it. Additionally, there are significant differences in image processing between this and all other versions The standard DVD transfer used around the world seems to zoom in about 5%, meaning that the Blu-ray version has more visual information on both sides of the frame. The 1982 Palace Pictures VHS, 1995 Japanese Beam Laserdisc, 1999 US Elite Laserdisc, and DVD versions all look identical, with only slight differences in color timing and brightness levels.
