The Family That Preys 2008 – The scum running through Tyler Perry’s The Family That Praises is the cubic footage equivalent of late-night soaps like Dallas, Dynasty, and their offspring.
While it’s great to see embarrassingly underemployed actors like Woodard and Bates on the big screen, [these] inconsistent characters don’t even make sense.

The Family That Praises shows great progress in playwright Tyler Perry’s filmmaking training. It’s also his best film to date, a melodrama about sibling rivalry, infidelity, family business power plays and terminal illness.

As usual, the villains are very evil and the good guys are very noble – until they go mad and see their wives.
Wonderfully old-school and undeniably entertaining, Tyler Perry’s The Family That Praises is a glossy, double-edged throwback to the melodramas of the 1950s, the source of great soaps like Giant, Dallas and Dynasty.
Although at times the film flowed like a soap opera with its dramatic twists and pregnant interludes, it held your attention.
It has Tyler Perry’s trademark trinity of sincerity, spirituality and story. If he passes on those other “s” – subtleties – that’s fine.

Woodard is the best in the company. If he’s not in this, I think it’s doomed.
As usual, the moral remains: faith and family are the central virtues, while lust and greed are duly punished, although Perry is beginning to hide his manipulation.
[Perry] has delivered time and time again to his devoted audience, a preachy, frantic, tone-shifting, evangelical soap opera.
(Tyler) Perry writes, produces and directs a cinematic one-man band and plays a respectable husband and construction worker, rising to become a filmmaker.

I appreciate what Perry is trying to do with his movies, it’s nice to see an urban movie that isn’t a “gangsta movie”, but he needs to tone down the soap opera qualities and let his stories unfold naturally.
