Jacob Wilhelm Grimm was born in 1785 and 1786 near Frankfurt, Germany. In their early twenties, they began learning languages that would eventually lead to the publication of fairy tales and fables. They got their stories from farmers and villagers, and sometimes from published works from other cultures. Jacob did most of the research; Wilhelm put the stories into literary form.

Ancient Greek philosophers wondered if there was change. Today, however, the concept of change is well established – in fact, people often complain about how hard it is to keep up with change in modern life.

Change can have negative connotations. It can be easy to dwell on the confusing aspects of the disruption—all the chaos and uncertainty—and not take advantage of the new beginning. This is why crisis management relies heavily on shaping people’s perceptions. In times of crisis, companies must summon the trust to act and make decisions.
The story of Hansel and Gretel, taken from the Brothers Grimm collection of fairy tales, can be read as a crisis of survival. Without the help of their parents or friends, Hansel and Gretel must break free from slavery and defeat the wicked witch. This myth shows us the detours and successful strategies on the way to the ultimate goal, whether it is eternal happiness or – in the case of a company – financial success. It also shows that the desire to change and control the situation must come from oneself and not from others.
For the Hansel and Gretel family, life is a crisis. They were busy making a clean living, something to eat. The stepmother offers a solution that goes beyond what might be considered normal: she wants to abandon the children in the forest so that there will be fewer hungry mouths to feed. The father agreed, who was miserable but weak and unable to fight. Big decisions are made. The next day, the stepmother carefully and calmly carried out her plan.
The crisis did not surprise Hansel and Gretel. Just as a manager might see a dark cloud on the financial horizon, the two children overhear their parents’ conversation and prepare: Hansel picks up shiny pebbles and by dropping them on the road as the children are taken deeper. A tree, managed to find his way home – much to the chagrin of his stepmother.

But a crisis is not a crisis until it gets worse. The stepmother tried again. This time he locks the door at night so that the children cannot go out to collect pebbles. Children respond by using the same strategies that worked before, except with slightly different tools. They keep the pieces of bread given to them for breakfast and put them in their pockets. As they are led deeper into the forest, they leave one path, one at a time, to find their way back home. But the birds eat the leftovers, and the children realize that the strategy that worked in the past has failed in hard times.
Crises have a way of undoing strategies that worked well before. Tools such as stakeholder value, scorecards and benchmarking can be very useful in long-term business management. As long as everything is going well, there’s no reason to be against a device-based strategy. But in general, such equipment is insufficient in uncertain times.
In increasing desperation, the children meet beautiful birds and snowflakes who lead them through the forest to an alluring but mysterious gingerbread house. It seems that the house is not only a shelter but also a solution to the thorny problem of hunger – it is also a house to eat. The people in the house invite the children with the usual temptations and promises. And so Hansel and Gretel find themselves in an “adventurous” situation – but one that quickly turns dangerous when the witch (probably her) reveals her terrible plan to make the children fat and destroy them in the end.
When the business results are more red than black and when conventional management methods no longer lead to turnover, the situation may seem as hopeless as in Hansel and Gretel. And ridiculous solutions – such as cutting costs, cutting R&D budgets, etc. – can be very attractive.

Hansel and Gretel go from the oven to the fire. The witch received them well, and found them imprisoned, awaiting their fate. But at the last moment, Hansel and Gretel take over and become masters of their own destiny. Gretel pretends not to know and convinces the witch to show her how to climb into the oven. We know how it ends – the wicked witch dies and the children are reunited with their father.
Gretel’s solution was not analytical but fundamental. He earned his freedom through heroic deeds. It was a decisive moment, a moment when the crisis became an opportunity for liberation. Of course, it had to take a turn for the worse before the kids mustered up the courage to break free.
Managers who find themselves in a unique situation and want to break free from conventional constraints will not be able to do so unless they rethink their goals—and their strategies.
Uncertainty is a fact of life, especially in business. And when uncertainty strikes with an irresistible force, we speak of a crisis. Although we all fear a crisis, it can do a great job of forcing you in a direction you wouldn’t have dared to take before.

It can be an uplifting, even enlightening, experience. When you step out of your comfort zone, you have the opportunity to discover new and sometimes unexpected ways to push past insecurities. A crisis, once a powerful obstacle, becomes an opportunity to move forward with significant and positive change.
But for some people (and some companies), the crisis can be more disruptive
