This is why crisis management relies heavily on shaping people’s perceptions. In times of crisis, companies must summon the trust to act and make decisions.
The story of Hansel and Gretel, taken from the Brothers Grimm collection of fairy tales, can be read as a crisis of survival. Without the help of their parents or friends, Hansel and Gretel must break free from slavery and defeat the wicked witch. This myth shows us the detours and successful strategies on the way to the ultimate goal, whether it is eternal happiness or – in the case of a company – financial success. It also shows that the desire to change and control the situation must come from oneself and not from others.
For the Hansel and Gretel family, life is a crisis. They were busy making a clean living, something to eat. The stepmother offers a solution that goes beyond what might be considered normal: she wants to abandon the children in the forest so that there will be fewer hungry mouths to feed. The father agreed, who was miserable but weak and unable to fight. Big decisions are made. The next day, the stepmother carefully and calmly carried out her plan.
The crisis did not surprise Hansel and Gretel. Just as a manager might see a dark cloud on the financial horizon, the two children overhear their parents’ conversation and prepare: Hansel picks up shiny pebbles and by dropping them on the road as the children are taken deeper. It seems that the house is not only a shelter but also a solution to the thorny problem of hunger – it is also a house to eat. The people in the house invite the children with the usual temptations and promises. And so Hansel and Gretel find themselves in an “adventurous” situation – but one that quickly turns dangerous when the witch (probably her) reveals her terrible plan to make the children fat and destroy them in the end.
When the business results are more red than black and when conventional management methods no longer lead to turnover, the situation may seem as hopeless as in Hansel and Gretel. And ridiculous solutions – such as cutting costs, cutting R&D budgets, etc. – can be very attractive.

Hansel and Gretel go from the oven to the fire. The witch received them well, and found them imprisoned, awaiting their fate.
