I’m excited that #HateUGive is free on digital platforms on Tuesday. I hope the movie makes some sense. Our story is a reminder that we should never be afraid to raise our voices in the name of justice. We must stand up for what we believe. The Hate U Give Free Movie
Amanda Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, K.A. Apa, General and Anthony Mackie is an American drama film. The story follows 16-year-old Starr Carter, who witnesses the murder of his childhood friend Khalil by the police. What follows is a reexamination of Starr’s place in society, her racial identity, and her activist role. The story is a powerful message worth watching (or revisiting) as we all consider how to take action against police brutality and racial injustice in America.

Movies and more that demand your attention. George Tillman Jr. The Hate U Give, starring Amandla Stenberg and based on Angie Thomas’ novel of the same name, falls into the latter category. Focusing on one of America’s best-researched racial dynamics and the murder of a young, unarmed Black man, Hate U Give (THUG) is gruesome yet powerful. It’s without a doubt the best movie to see this Black History Month for movies, and it deserves our money and support.
The film opens with Starr Carter’s main character Maverick (played by Russell Hornsby) giving a “speech” to his young children (later introducing Black Panther’s “Ten Points”) and no, in this context, we’re not talking about the birds and the bees, we’re talking about something life-threatening. . For many black people, the first ‘conversation’ they hear is a drama about what to do when they call the police. Unfortunately, in this day and age (and most of the time) how to talk about, prevent, and prepare for police shootings is very important, as proven by years of fatal cases, but unfortunately, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland and Philando Castile. In a society that claims to be “post-racist,” police brutality is an ongoing tragedy that hints at how much is yet to come.

This opening scene will appeal to many black viewers and perhaps alienate white audience members. It sets the tone for a film that has moments of pleasant lightness and humor, but is also challenging for a teenage audience. But, as a viewer, Maverick’s last command: his children never forget, “It’s an honor to be black, because you come from greatness,” highlights my admiration for Angie Thomas’ novel and the new film and I’m Connected. have an emotional relationship with him. .
For fans of the novel, the New York Times bestseller banned in Texan schools for its ability to illuminate the truth, this is a satisfyingly faithful adaptation of a book that seems too sacred to white readers. this novel is their first literary appearance. Yes, I’ll let you know right now that your favorite book Devante is not in the movie and as many of us expected, KA Apa Starr’s white boy Chris (a last minute reast during the primary election. It was Kean Lawley who was exposed for sharing racist comments on his Youtube channel) was definitely a less than ideal choice. However, Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Anthony Mackie and young T. Wright’s performances cover those things – and I hate to say it, Disney’s Sabrina Carpenter. Carpenter plays the ignorant and basically racist “best friend” so well that you feel like you’re sending hate mail (but you don’t, because even though it’s very real, she’s an actress and not an act of hate).
You know, not everyone has superpowers like you. Shine your light. I didn’t name you Starr by accident.
Stenberg does a great job in this film, as he did with Roo in The Hunger Games, but this time with more purpose and depth. Although he has a growing list of credits behind him, THUG is definitely a successful performance as he proves that he is more than just an influential social media activist. She leads a double life as a young black woman. One is her mostly black community in Garden Heights, where she lives among community leaders and gang leaders, and at Williamson Prep, a mostly white private school, she lives as a version of Starr 2, trying to be as relatable and dangerous as possible. The role probably hit close to home for Stenberg, who is of mixed heritage, and would be similar to many people of color. When we introduce her to her skeptical Williamson friends, “Hayley must have watched Live from Compton again last night” is the sound of jokes and we’ve got it, we’ve got it. We know code-switching, eye-rolling, and microaggressions.

When we meet the charming Khalil (Alge Smith) at a house party, (Starr’s childhood friend) we learn about Starr’s complicated and deliberately double life. However, when Khalil and Starr leave the party after their breakup and explain what Tupac’s ‘THUG L.I.F.E’ means (Fu*ks Hate Little Babies) there’s some serious shit. “What society gives us when we’re young, when we grow up, we come back to kick their ass. Do you get that?” Khalil explains to Starr. But during the course of this film, especially in the next scene and later, T. The big scene in the movie with Wright, we really get it. By the time you leave the movie, the meaning is crystal clear.
As viewers watch an unarmed young man killed, his life cut short because an officer mistook a hairbrush for a gun, the question is raised; How can you blame a dead person for your own murder? This can and always does happen in America. It’s such a racist and unfair profile that the officer in charge still points a gun at Khalil’s dead body (which is absurd) while Starr watches him die. So racial and unfair profiling was involved, which the officer in charge took as innocent and painted Starr as the victim and responsible for the one witness.
To be honest, I’ve seen this movie twice so far, so it’s not easy. Even after reading the book beforehand. I watched the length with clenched fists and tears, and many scenes evoked a strong emotional reaction in the audience. There are so many amazing scenes that I don’t want to spoil for you, but as a viewer you feel all of Starr and we live in a blissfully ignorant world where people of color still can’t do it all. anything else is possible, it’s exciting to see a white audience in their shoes. I hope this will be taken as a learning experience.
In a gentle way, I want the audience to feel uncomfortable and uncomfortable, and both the director and the author feel uncomfortable, because it is that feeling that will ultimately lead them to learn more and do better. We all have a part to play, and if anything, as Starr told Haley, THUG “doesn’t have to use the N-word and fire on black people to be racist” and is a great example of how to be real with you. an important but simple life lesson that many Australians have yet to learn.
