The Hobbit Trilogy In Order – That’s not how these films were made to be seen (and neither was the rest of the trilogy). However, the results were surprising.
You must be looking at things in a strange way in retrospect. The end leads to the middle, which leads to the beginning.
The Hobbit Trilogy In Order
After seeing Smaug destroy Laketown with such brute force and recklessness, the scene at the end of the second film where he flies to Esgaroth was more relevant and disturbing. to Bilbo
The Hobbit Trilogy: 14 Mind Blowing Facts You Probably Didn’t Know
, I couldn’t understand the overall innocence of the film. Not only the character of Bilbo, but also the other dwarves and the atmosphere of the story. The hindsight of watching the trilogy confirmed the power of this first film and made the gradual shift in tone with each film all the more apparent.
Unfortunately, the personalities of the dwarves are still largely undeveloped, and this “flashback” reveals more than what we’ve seen chronologically.
It is the characters of Bilbo and Thorin that stand out the most. Seeing the end of their journey and then the way to the middle of the adventure and the beginning of the quest gives a clear picture of these personalities. Not only with his character, but also with the performance of the actors.
If the purpose of watching the trilogy is to see the evolution of the character, then watching it in reverse does the same thing: however, the “end” result is different. This fear and naivety is visible

, you’ll feel compelled to continue your journey and watch the other two again to complete the circle. So really, watching the trilogy in reverse has the advantage that when you go to the “third” movie (it was the first), it doesn’t have an ending.
All that being said, I don’t do this very often. Movies are perfectly designed to be watched in the intended order. It’s a fun activity though.
Next time and continue with the other two. I’m sure this story will have a different reception.
We’ve already experienced the story the way we should have when we saw the trilogy back-to-back. However, breaking away from a chronological view can be an equally refreshing experience. How to watch The Lord of the Rings in chronological order. The Hobbit movies, the LotR trilogy and The Rings of Power in prime order
From its epic scope and unparalleled sense of adventure to its beloved characters and their unforgettable relationships, The Lord of the Rings remains one of the greatest fantasy film series of all time. Now, 21 years after The Fellowship of the Ring, LotR is back in the limelight thanks to Amazon’s great new Middle-earth TV series, The Rings of Power.
Watching the Lord of the Rings movies in order is a fairly easy task, and we’ve created this article to make sure that beginners can properly navigate the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Being new to the series, the short stories below will be spoiler-free, aside from broad plot points and character introductions.
There’s a second list at the bottom of the article where the movies are ordered by their actual release dates, if you want to watch them in that order (like me).
The Lord Of The Rings And The Hobbit: In What Order To Watch The Movies And Series In The Saga?
There are a total of six J.R.R. movies. Tolkien’s Middle Earth: The three Lord of the Rings films and the three Hobbit films. There is also the 1997 animated film The Hobbit, which is separate from the new films. Warner Bros. recently announced several new LotR movies, and Amazon is already previewing Rings of Power season 2. You can check out our guide to where to watch The Lord of the Rings for streaming information.
Amazon’s Rings of Power series takes place in the second age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, which take place in the third age. It’s a period in Middle-earth where we’ll see “the Forging of the Rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic story of Numenor, and the final alliance between Elves and Men,” according to showrunners J.D. according to Payne. and Patrick McKay.
The only possible confusion in the Lord of the Rings-The Hobbit timeline is due to the fact that The Hobbit trilogy takes place 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, even though it was released ten years later.
Chronologically, the story begins with the 2012 film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey starring Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins Jr. (portrayed by Ian Holmes in the LotR trilogy). Gandalf—one of several characters whose stories run through both trilogies—recruits Bilbo to join Thorin (Richard Armitage) and company in helping to reclaim the dwarven kingdom under Erebor, the same lonely mountain that was robbed by Smaug the dragon. Along the way, Bilbo meets Gollum for the first time and possesses the One Ring.
The Gaffer’s Elite: The Films
Thorin and his company continue to the Lonely Mountain, fighting giant spiders and orcs along the way. Orlando Bloom’s Legolas (another LotR staple) joins the fray alongside newcomer Tauriel (played by Ant-Man’s Evangeline Lilly). Before the company reaches Esgaroth, south of the lake city of Erebor, Bilbo descends a mountain where he meets Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch). Smaug finally leaves his lair and goes to Esgaroth, where he concludes the Hobbit trilogy.
The conflict with Smaug is resolved, and the film’s title battle begins with an army of two tribes of men, dwarves, elves, and orcs. We’re being very vague here, with the Battle of the Five Armies ready for resolution (and with it spoilers), but get ready for an action-packed movie that finally picks up where the Lord of the Rings trilogy begins: Return to the Shire 60 years later, when Gandalf visits Bilbo on his 111th birthday.
The first Middle-earth film by release date (and fourth chronologically) is 2001’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The perspective shifts from Bilbo to his much younger cousin Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood). After some exposition outlining the current state of Middle-earth, we return to Bilbo’s 111th birthday celebration in the Shire.
Bilbo goes on a final adventure, leaving the One Ring with Frodo; Gandalf warns Frodo that he must leave the Shire as Sauron (

The Lord of the Rings) and his evil neighbors—specifically the Nazgul, the Nine Horsemen—will come after the ring. Frodo leaves the Shire with his best friend Sammy Gammy (Sean Astin), hobbits Mary (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippen (Billy Boyd).
After several perilous journeys and meeting characters including Aragorn (Mortensen), Legolas (Bloom) and Saruman (Christopher Lee), a plan is hatched to destroy the ring in the fire of doom on Mount Mordor, where the rings of power were forged. The plan must be carried out by a rogue group called the Fellowship of the Ring: the wizard Gandalf; hobbits Frodo, Samwy, Mary and Pippen; Legolas the elf; Gimli the Dwarf (John Rhys-Davies); and the humans Aragorn and Boromir (Sean Bean).
A treacherous journey takes them to Lothlorien, an elven kingdom ruled by Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel, who also appears in The Hobbit trilogy and is one of the main characters in Amazon’s new series (this new version of Galadriel is played by Morfeed Clarke). Galadriel advises Frodo, and he decides to continue his journey to Mordor without the others, taking only his most trusted man, Sam, with him.
Frodo and Sam gain a third, reluctant companion in Gollum (voiced by Andy Serkis), a hobbit who has long been corrupted by the power of the One Ring. The trio make their way to the outskirts of Mordor, only to be stopped by an unexpected intervention. Other members of the fellowship begin a rescue mission; Gandalf takes on a new form; And the first epic battle of the trilogy takes place in Helm’s Deep Valley.

Like The Battle of the Five Armies, Return of the King is basically all spoilers, so again, we’ll only highlight the broader plot points. Gollum, using the ring’s influence, confronts Frodo with Sam and leads the former to the abode of his mortal enemy. Meanwhile, the rest of the Fellowship take part in the Battle of Pelenor Fields, a massive, final battle against Sauron’s dark forces.
Eventually, Frodo and Sam enter Mordor in disguise and, with the help of other members of the Society, figure out the original plan. After the journey ends, we enter the fourth century of Middle-earth and meet the bitter finale.
Even after the end of the first season of Rings of Power, our adventures in Middle-earth are far from over. Not only is there a second season of Amazon’s “Rings of Power,” but new feature films are also in production. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have struck a deal to make more Lord of the Rings movies, though we’re not sure where they’ll actually take place in the Middle-earth timeline.
