I made a conscious decision to watch the movies first and then read the books. This is a reversal of what I normally do, but I find that I’m less disappointed with movies if I don’t come to the table with a fixed notion of how or if the movie and the book have changed. The story begins after Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) and Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) are rescued and taken to District 13, a landless rebel hideout. While Katniss is happy to be reunited with Gale (Liam Hemsworth), her mother (Paula Malcomson) and younger sister, Primrose (Willow Shields), are devastated to learn that Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) has been captured with fellow winners Johanna . (Jena Malone) and Finnick’s girlfriend, Annie (Stef Dawson).

I want to talk about the concept of a future where children are sent to games where they fight to the death and all for the pleasure of rich and spoiled citizens. This is the world in which Katniss and her friends live. The people of the districts are overworked, poor, hungry and under the rule of a police state that is ruled by a tyrant. President Snow uses the white rose to taunt Katniss. Snow both admires and fears the girl who is both a symbol of freedom for all the districts and his mortal enemy.
Katniss has a crush on Peeta. She never expected this to happen, but it did and Snow is going to use that love to destroy Katniss and the rebellion. President Coin wants to use Katniss’ anger to defeat her rebellion. What they don’t even understand is that Katniss is pure of heart and that, my friend, is a weapon that can open the gates of hell itself.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 was directed by Francis Lawrence and is based on the trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games trilogy strangely reflects the growing class divide that exists today. Corporations have more say in how our government is run and the middle class is gone; becoming extinct and Suzanne Collins captured this future reality in her stories. Katniss in the movie is a symbol of survival, determination, rebellion and love.

Philip Seymour Hoffman had completed most of the Mockingjay scenes before his death. We will miss him.
I’m glad I didn’t read the books first. I went to see all the unbiased movies and enjoyed being shocked and surprised by the first three movies and can’t wait for Mockingjay part 2 to come out. In one scene, a young woman is attacked by a young man, who knocks her to the ground and puts his hands around her neck. However, another man hits the assailant on the head and the woman’s injuries are later hidden by a necklace. There are scenes where rebel groups clash with soldiers, which include people being shot down and hit by bullets. However, there are very few details about blood or injuries. The corpses are seen in a couple of sequences, with some charred skeletons in the ruins of a city and bodies covered by sheets outside a hospital building. These images are only briefly seen and there is no focus near the wounds.

There are several sequences where the main characters are in danger, with some large-scale battle sequences as the rebels take on government soldiers. Cities are attacked, with people forced to flee for safety, and some question whether the characters survived or not.
The film also contains references to death by hanging, with the main character singing a song about a “hanging tree”, and the song then sung by a crowd of people as they begin to follow him.
