In one scene, a young man assaults a young woman, who knocks her to the ground and puts her arms around her. However, another man hits the attacker on the head and the woman’s wounds are then covered with her neck brace. There are scenes where rebel groups fight against soldiers, including people being beaten and bullets being fired. However, there are few details of blood or injury. In some sequences we see corpses, with some charred skeletons in the ruins of a city, and bodies covered in sheets outside a hospital building. These images are only seen briefly and there is no close focus on the injuries.

There are several sequences where the main characters are in danger, with several sequences of large-scale battles as the rebels take on government soldiers. Cities are attacked and people are forced to flee to safety, and there is some question as to whether or not the characters survived.
There are also references to death by hanging in the film, with the main character singing a song about a “hanging tree”, and the song is then sung by crowds of other people who start following him. You. I have all the Hunger Games books, but I haven’t read any of them yet. I made a conscious decision to watch the movies first and read the books second. This is the opposite of what I usually do, but I’ve found that I’m less disappointed with movies if I don’t come to the table with a fixed idea of how or if the movie and book got along. The story takes place after Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Beetee (Jeffrey Wright) and Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin) are rescued and taken to District 13, a landless rebel hideout. Though Katniss is delighted to be reunited with Gale (Liam Hemsworth), her mother (Paula Malcomson) and younger sister, Primrose (Willow Shields), she is devastated to learn that Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) has been captured along with her fellow victors Johanna (Jena Malone) and Finnick’s girlfriend, Annie (Stef Dawson).
District 12 also has her mentors, Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) and the lovable Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), a woman who can work fashion wonders with canvas and scarves. Plutarch Heavensbee, played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, is in hiding as is President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) who wants Katniss to lead the revolution.

Katniss is a reluctant rebel until she sees firsthand what has happened to District 12 thanks to the evil President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Coin’s promotional crew films Katniss’ reaction and rousing speech, including the talented Natalie Dormer from “Game of Thrones” and “The Tudors” as Cressida.
I won’t talk too much about the story because this is a film that should be savored… slowly… like a good wine or a scent of rose. I want to talk about the concept of the future where children are sent to games where they fight to the death and all for the entertainment of rich and spoiled citizens. This is the world Katniss and her friends live in. The people in the areas are overworked, poor, hungry and under the rule of a police state ruled by a tyrant. President Snow uses the White Rose to taunt Katniss. Neve respects and fears the girl, a symbol of freedom for all the districts and a mortal enemy.
Katniss is in love with Peeta. She never expected this to happen, but it has and Snow will use that love to destroy Katniss and the rebellion. President Coin wants to use Katniss’ anger to defeat her rebellion. What neither of them realize is that Katniss is pure of heart and, my friend, she is a weapon that can break down the gates of hell itself.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 was directed by Francis Lawrence and is based on the trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games trilogy shows the growing division between the classes that is happening today. Corporations have more say in how our government is run, and the middle class is disappearing; he is dying and Suzanne Collins has captured this future reality in her stories. Katniss in the film is a symbol of survival, determination, rebellion and love.

I’m glad I didn’t read the books first. I went to see all the films unbiased and enjoyed being surprised and amazed by the first three films and can’t wait for Mockingjay part 2 to come out. I will read the books at my leisure and savor the images my imagination will draw from the story and whatever Katniss will look like in my imagination. A rose is still a rose.
