The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 Movie – The beginning of the end – but we are already familiar with such things, aren’t we? I’m talking about splitting the final volume of the book series into two movies.
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) is rescued from the site of the second Hunger Games and brought to District 13, where the rebels gather to wage war against the Capitol. Katniss’ home, District 12, is destroyed, but Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) rescues some people, including Katniss’s mother (Paula Malcolmson) and sister Prim (Willow Shields).

What struck me about this part of the series was the barren look. In the first film, I would have wished for a more casual intern center, but the sparse set suits District 13 perfectly in this film. And it’s not just the set, but the clothes and make-up of the characters reflect the military status of the district. Seeing Jennifer Lawrence mostly without makeup…it just makes her act that much more intense. And not only him. Once again, Julianne Moore took my breath away with her performance. She is excellent as District 13 leader Alma Coen. His stance reflects the brutality and power of the police, but he is also sympathetic.
I think my favorite scene – probably everyone’s favorite – is the one with the group of young people (Natalie Dormer as Cressida) on the lake. It’s a stark contrast to the scenes in the underground facility, which are much more serene and peaceful than the forest setting in The Hunger Games, and then there’s the song that Katniss sings — and it’s great. Jennifer Lawrence has a raspy, raspy voice that’s perfectly suited for the situation and the song.
If there’s anything I didn’t like about this movie, I can’t remember it now, because there were too many good things to remember about it, most importantly the amazing performances by the people involved. Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) sans makeup, stripped of her Capitol treatment, desperate and vulnerable is a beautiful thing. Philip Seymour Hoffman in his latest role as Plutarch Heavensbee… The casting in this series is amazing and makes this movie more dazzling from the inside out than the visuals are.
This movie series just keeps getting better with each movie, as with the books, I always think the first one is the best. It makes a great contrast – and I can watch these great movies on DVD. The film grossed over $333 million at the North American box office, making it the highest-grossing domestic film of the year.
