Douglas has rarely been more tender-hearted or likable, and Brooks can only be described as a simple Brooksian. Unfortunately, the absurd humor, ridiculous plot and uninteresting characters didn’t make it nearly as entertaining for us.
New Genre never quite captures the cheesy anarchy of the original, something worth arguing about if you’re remaking a classic comedy. But at least it’s funny enough that we can’t call it profanity.
It’s nice to see Douglas in the rare movie where he doesn’t have to grit his teeth in suspense, just as it’s always nice to see Brooks being mentally tortured.
