The Last Samurai (2003) is an epic drama film about a unique period in Japanese history, the conflict between modernity and tradition, the clash between cultures, and the conflict between different styles of warfare. However, in this film, there can be not only conflict, but also cooperation and mutual understanding between cultures. Although not based on a true story, the film is based on real events that took place in Japan in the latter half of the 19th century and highlights the Western influence on Japan during the Meiji Restoration. or reform.
The main character, Nathan Algren (perfectly played by Tom Cruise), is a captain in the US Army’s 7th Cavalry Regiment. Nathan is a veteran of the American Indian War and possibly the Civil War. He is a bitter man, shocked by the ill-treatment of the Indian tribes during the brutal battle. At the opening of the film, we are saddened by what happened to innocent Indian women and children who had no choice but to obey Nathan’s orders and the lives of his commanders, who were drunk.

However, due to lack of purpose, money, or both, Nathan is recruited by his former commanding officer, Colonel Bagley, who, still resentful of his involvement in the Indian killings, agrees to help train Japanese soldiers to fight in the West. Samurai rebellion continues in Japan. Algren has a bad hand because he has to train farmers, not real soldiers shooting guns for the first time, and is better suited to farms than battlefields.
In addition, he is expected to soon lead them into battle against the samurai, for which there is no time to prepare. One of the themes of this film is that good people are corrupted by following the wrong orders of their superiors and often get injured, captured or killed due to the carelessness and indifference of their superiors. Nathan is a good soldier, but he can’t train peasants to become soldiers in the time he’s given, especially when he doesn’t know how to compare with samurai and peasant armies.
In a battle between the soldiers and the samurai, the samurai kill most of them in a surprise attack and then refuse to fight in the way of the “modern” army that Nathan has assembled. In the battle, one of Nathan’s American army colleagues is killed and most of his army is destroyed. Restless and desperate, Nathan fights ruthlessly against the samurai and manages to hold his own. Katsumoto, the leader of the samurai, decided to capture Nathan and keep him as a prisoner instead of killing him. Unbeknownst to Nathan, Katsumoto sees something in Nathan and believes that he is a good warrior, probably because he was able to fight until his last breath despite trying to kill the samurai.
The samurai, who resents Ethan’s presence in his village and killed his old enemy and Katsumoto’s sister’s husband, does not take kindly to Nathan at first. Nathan also has preconceived notions and stereotypes about samurai and their culture.
The 20+ Best Quotes From ‘the Last Samurai’
As time passes, Nathan begins to adjust to the role of captain in his new life. He earns the respect of the other samurai by learning the Japanese language and culture, and by practicing swordsmanship and training with others. He also notices Katsumoto’s love for his sister and befriends his son. Although it’s not easy, he appreciates the samurai and their way of life. They even begin to resent the modernity and loss of tradition imposed on them by the Imperial Japanese government.
In this way, The Last Samurai does an excellent job of driving home. When you live in another country long enough, you start to really accept and like certain aspects of that culture. In this language, if you’ve been able to adapt, you’d probably prefer to stay there now rather than return to a country and culture whose flaws were so obvious when you were blind. This movie does a good job of showing “Stockholm Syndrome” and how strong it can be over time, especially if you’ve had a romantic interest in a woman or man for a long time.
Algren no longer suffers from nightmares during the Indian Wars and gives up alcohol as he seeks alternative ways to survive with the samurai. Perhaps most importantly, he befriends the samurai leader Katsumoto, who explains to Nathan how vital it is to them to preserve their worldview and their 1,000-year-old heritage. Nathan agrees with them and begins to understand how important the ways of the samurai are to Japanese culture and customs.
The movie’s biggest twist is when Nathan starts fighting off two ninja attacks alongside the samurai, and it’s one of the most amazing scenes I’ve ever seen. It’s a great scene where you have samurai fighting ninjas, and it’s a really powerful part of the movie that helps save Nathan Katsumoto’s life. Samurai were so devoted to their way of life that they would die or “seppuku” (suicide) to preserve their honor.

Without giving away the rest of the film, we see the betrayal of Japan’s emperor by big business interests and the West’s desperate attempt to modernize it. It is true that Japan had to catch up in trade and war, but it is important to remember the ways of the samurai and remember their customs. It is wrong to destroy important things
