The Longest Ride story began when I learned about Black Mountain College. I was struggling to find something to excite my next novel when I came across a link to college online. I was intrigued, to say the least: it seemed so unlikely that an isolated college in my home state of North Carolina would have such a huge impact on the American art scene that I immediately began researching the school. Considering all that had happened during the school’s 25 or so years of existence, including World War II, it was full of possibilities. The character of Ira quickly came to mind and The Longest Ride started to fall into place.

Since Ira and his wife Ruth were such wonderful examples of enduring love, I wanted to find a perfect counterpoint as an example of new love. And that’s how I came up with Luke and Sophia. Sophia was created to resonate with my college-age fans, and Luke is truly the epitome of the all-American guy. I had never been to a professional bull riding event, but there are so many ranches in North Carolina that it made sense that there would be a bull rider.
Black Mountain, NC is a small town in southern Appalachia in the Blue Ridge region. The town of Black Mountain was founded in 1893 and named after the Black Mountain range that borders the town to the north. Residents and visitors can enjoy cozy shops, friendly neighborhoods and wonderful nature for botanists, hikers and those who want to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Founded in 1933, Black Mountain College was a new type of college in which the study of art was a central part of a liberal arts education, in which the educational principles of John Dewey played a large role.

Directed by George Tillman Jr. (“Soul Food”, “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete”), the film is the latest adaptation of the work of an unmistakable writer. For those who know his novels – which for our purposes are more like the beach and the sun, the white people kissing in the rain, the films they inspired – Mr. Spark’s name evokes a genre, an Aesthetic, a weak, sugary, incredibly catchy figure.

A Nicholas Sparks movie is a romantic melodrama in which the road to lasting love is paved with complications, sometimes absurd, sometimes life-threatening. The venue is usually North Carolina (unless tax incentives in other states inspire a change). Kissing sunsets on the beach and in the rain, you can expect the most: an atmosphere of implicit but not doctrinal Christian spirituality; a young couple from two different worlds (although both white); at least one health crisis; a death; a handful of bad characters whose badness isn’t quite apparent to the main couple until it’s too late. They can be rival suitors, unfaithful friends, sleazy relatives, or just plain mean. It’s your job to add drama and work with the invisible hand of fate to keep the story moving like crazy.
“The Longest Ride” is a bit of an anomaly in that it’s almost entirely devoid of villains, save for a terrifying bull named Rango. Of course, nothing personal. Early in the film, Rango throws a young rider named Luke Collins (Scott Eastwood), causing serious (though not catastrophic) injuries and ending Luke’s efforts to become the best bull rider in the rodeo ring. It is important to note that Luke is motivated less by seeking fame or sponsorship than by keeping the family farm going after his father’s death. Speaking of fathers, Mr. Eastwood’s resemblance to his own father’s younger, “rawhide”-era incarnation is downright uncanny: jawline, a hint of a smile, blue eyes still squinting.
At a competition a year after the Rango incident, these underlings meet the duo of Baby Blues, owned by Sophia Danko (Britt Robertson), an art historian at Wake Forest University who has teamed up with some of her sisters in hopes of being the “hottest.” Guys.” Not that Sophia is the kind of girl, just like Luke isn’t the kind of guy to be misled by rodeo groups filling the stands. He’s an old-fashioned guy who insists on buying the drinks and making the first call, who shows up on his first date with flowers and plans for a moonlit lakeside barbecue picnic.
But like I said: different worlds. Sophia, the daughter of Polish immigrants raised in New Jersey – her background is perhaps the least believable part of the entire film, which is saying a lot – awaits an internship at a Manhattan art gallery. Luke vows to stay on Rango’s back for eight seconds, even if it kills him. (What could be!) What kind of future can they have together?

Of course, you and I know the answer very well – it’s kissing under a jet of water – although the events that reveal it are beyond our usual ability to predict. But the obstacles along the way seem trivial enough to make the story of their relationship quite boring, despite the charm and sincerity of the actors. Fortunately, they meet Ira Levinson (Alan Alda), a widow whose chronicle of monogamous happiness is their own mirror and prophecy. Recovering from a car accident, Ira reads a collection of letters about his courtship and marriage. It’s not entirely clear why he wrote so many letters to a woman he saw every day—letters that sometimes seem to recount what they did together hours before they were composed—but it’s cute.
