MY APPOINTMENT: What a fun and bloody monster movie this turned out to be. This film holds up much better than I could have imagined. There’s nothing out of the ordinary going on here, just straight, well-made slimy monster movies… and for that I love it. This Stephen King classic has a strong cold opening. This first death scene has the personality to complement the mystery it wants (namely an off-screen death). Considering we saw very little of our killer, it’s still very satisfying and sensibly executed. Also kind of brutal considering the victim died after basically teaching the audience a rat cellar for 5 minutes.
An old textile factory in a small town in Maine has flooded cellars, decades of debris, alarming rat infestations, and poses a significant health and safety risk to anyone who enters. Desperate to pass safety inspections, the factory’s shady manager bribes the safety inspector to buy time and assembles a graveyard shift cleaning crew (including Andrew Divoff; Wishmaster 1-2,
Faust: Cursed Love). He also hires very enthusiastic exterminators (Brad Dourif; The Hazing, Child’s Play, Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky).

Not long after, a second accident stole another employee, complete with horrific creature effects. The monster effect is pretty amazing considering we never see that many at once. Realistic eyes, huge wings and claws, a wet throat that gapes when the mouth opens. As the death progresses, we also enjoy some shredded slashing and gore. We discover that the creature is exploring a network of mines beneath the mill connected to the catacombs of a neighboring cemetery.
Toward the end, the textile workers had charged and shortened one another as the monster patiently took them. Somehow the monster always seems to be where it should be in this forgotten mining maze. I started to hope that there would be a lot of creatures.
The cave nest and its sea of bones is an amazing sight. But, jeez, when we finally got to see the monster for real… it was slimy dirty animatronic fun! A lot of care is put into these animals. His ears twitch, the movement of his mouth, and the way he articulates his slimy claws bring him to life. And even though I love the look of this thing, why does it look like it’s covered in snot right now? It looked like a giant bat… with a prehensile rat tail. We can see a lot of these very disgusting monsters. If I’m being honest, it was pretty awesome and well worth the wait. Plus, it comes to a really thick end.
For his only feature film, director Ralph S. Singleton did a fine job. I really enjoyed this movie. The story is very linear, easy to follow, but still satisfying.

Overall, it’s actually a lot nicer, gorier, and more interesting than I remember (which I last saw back in the 90s). The monsters look great and everything really sticks out!
