If you’ve been living under a purple Styrofoam rock for the past six months, you know that a new Power Rangers movie has just rolled off the Hollywood production line. Before this elegant, family-friendly battle, we returned to a cinematic source: 1995’s Power Rangers: The Movie, directed by Brian Spicer. The experience was wonderful, both good and bad. Now the image appears to have arrived in a sealed capsule sent from an unknown solar system. It raises some pre-Y2K questions, like how people heated soup before microwaves and how people made movies before computers did it for them.
Spicer’s multicolored dream opus can be seen as a transformative film. It shows that organic visual effects no longer cut the mustard, and the need for the height of scale created by digital effects has become the new norm. Angel Crow’s best eyes are charged with defeating an ancient entity named Evan Oz, who for some reason created a daytime TV quiz show host as an executioner. His arrival on Earth is marked by the discovery of a giant egg that, once cracked, releases an oleaginous gel that turns ordinary workers into zombie-like drones.
Most surprisingly, the Power Rangers are void of humanity. They have no personal relationships or lives outside of their daily work of saving the planet. Their souls seem to be pulled out of their torn bodies and burst into the sun. It’s strange, because in the absence of such obvious sources, you feel even more absurd to fill in the blanks. Bilateral klutz duo Bulk and Kelsey are also kept out of the action after a hilarious opening skit in the sky.
Everything is seen in the first half of the movie. All offerings are made of real clothing, not physical bodies, and are counter-minus scanned and computer-aided reproductions. There’s something unnerving about the idea of someone being accused of hacking into plywood in the middle of the night, as some enemy fighter often escapes from a former Soviet theme park. Finally ending up in a movie. The film grossed over $60 million at the box office.
Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie
The original Power Rangers doesn’t represent the traditional definition of “good”, it seems to combine three or four of the best TV episodes and recycle all the classic lines and musical pieces. But there’s more to it than a simple binary reading. A picture of misguided people who are limited in what you can achieve and it has a heartbreaking effect. Stupidity has become deceit.
: A climactic display of animal-inspired robotic mechs, allowing these early computer graphics to spill onto the screen. The moment Evan Oz launches himself from the top of the tower and onto the body of the giant monster, it seems like the animators are pushing the limited technology to its outer limits.
The saturation of complex computer effects that literally fools the eye – such as Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the resurrection of a long-dead actor – can make viewers forget the humble origins of this creative form. But the effects in the latest reel of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie have to be seen to be believed. No significant ability to express words. Over time, the film felt like an avant-garde work that almost served as a commentary on the modern blockbuster. Will we say the same about Kong: Skull Island in 2037?
