Critics’ Consensus: It may be shamelessly derivative and overly nostalgic, but Sandlot is nonetheless a genuinely sweet and funny coming-of-age adventure.
Colliderchase Hutchinson At the very least, it serves as a reminder to always have a spare baseball handy every time you play in the park in case an absurdly huge dog takes it over the fence. April 7, 2023 Full Review
Movie Frenzimat Here’s another movie from the 90s that the Brunson boys will love…although it probably won’t have the same appeal to viewers.

Hollywood Reporter Dune Byrge becomes a legend with this dirty underdog yarn that appeals not only to children, but also to their parents in their thirties or forties, and whose hero faces a terrible secret beyond the force field wall.
The Sandlot, Movies By Moonlight At Travis Park
A solid double over the Grand Slam, The Sandlot remains a refreshing antidote to the daily round of contract links on the sports page.
It is a film … that can be children, that exposes them to an inclusive world of imagination and dreams that children create completely separate from adult domains and values.
Effective editing, appropriately uses juvenile dialogue and laugh-out-loud humor in capturing the teenage adventure with genuine innocence and nostalgia.

Hh Favorite Baseball Movie Round 1: The Sandlot Vs. For Love Of The Game
A cheeky underdog that will appeal not only to children, but also to their parents in their thirties or forties.
The kids also have their own treehouse, meaning the production designer is the only person connected to the project.
There’s a quick turnaround involving the little guy and the nubile lifeguard, but the screaming and barking and feelings of betrayal grow tiresome.
Sweet and sincere, the film is remarkably shallow, full of incident and low on substance.

As the movie suggests, Field of Dreams quality isn’t the only thing to like about The Sandlot.
Even older kids and adults will notice that nothing much happens in this bayside suburb variation on The Little Rascals.
The Sandlot is a classic because most of the film focuses on time off the field. It’s not a movie about baseball players, it’s a movie about kids playing baseball.
It throws the proverbial curveball at convention, instead relying on baseball’s ultimate companion — nostalgia — to pluck its emotional and memorable strings. Fans of “The Sandlot” rejoice! A coming-of-age movie that all baseball-loving kids can relate to is coming to TV with original cast members.
Syracuse Amphitheater To Show Free Outdoor Movies Again In July
Writer-director David Mickey Evans said on “The Rain Delay” podcast that the TV series, which will run on an unnamed streaming service, will bring back Smalls, Hamm, Yeah-Yeah and the gang … but this time as adults in the 1980s.
“I just sold the television show ‘Sandlot.’ We’re about to get an order for the first two seasons,” he told “The Rain Delay” host Curt Cooperstown. “I have all the original cast members back. It takes place in 1984, when they are all 33 years old and they all have their own children, and I can tell you that.”
The original 1993 film, set in the San Fernando Valley in 1962, gained a cult following for its depiction of childhood, summer adventures and, of course, a love of baseball. A 2005 direct-to-DVD sequel featured a different cast, including James Earl Jones and Greg Jarman.
Last year, the cast got together again to talk about what life is like after the movie. “I mean, it definitely gives you free spots,” said actor Alan McClennan. “I can’t walk through a Las Vegas casino without someone yelling ‘yeah-yeah’.”
The Sandlot’ Cast To Host Special Viewing Party In Utah Celebrating Film’s 30th Anniversary
Devotees of the film got a special treat last summer when it was re-released on the big screen on its 25th anniversary. The original cast reunited in June to celebrate the original film’s milestone by taking the field at Dodgers Stadium for a game wearing Dodger’s jerseys with their character names on them.
As if all this isn’t big enough news, a prequel to the hit movie is currently in development. There is certainly a lot to look forward to from these old friends. After all, “Legends never die!”

Sandlot is rarely narrated by the main character (now an adult), who sometimes comments on events or helps move the story along. Tom Geary plays Scotty Smalls, the shy new kid on the block who wants to join a scrappy pickup baseball team that plays every day in the neighborhood sandbox. But he doesn’t know how to catch a baseball and his stepfather (Dennis Leary) is too busy to teach him. He tries out for the Sandlot gang anyway, and although he’s not very good, it turns out he’s lucky: there are only eight of them, and nine make up the team. The summer passes blissfully as Scotty learns to play ball under the wing of the oldest and best player, Benny Rodriguez (Mike Vitar), as well as Hamm, Squints, Repeat, and the rest of the kid eccentrics. However, the sky turns dark when Benny literally hits the stuffing with the team’s only baseball, a sign of impending doom or worse, bad luck. Wanting to set things right, Scotty returns home and borrows his stepfather’s ball, which he promptly uses to hit his first home run, taking the ball out of the sandlot and into the old man’s junkyard Mr. Myrtle (James Earl Jones) at home. To Myrtle’s legendary guard dog The Beast. Scotty admits that he took the ball without asking, and he naively explains that his stepfather wants it back because it has a woman’s name on it: some woman named Babe Ruth. The Sandlot gang is terrifyingly intent on getting the autographed ball out of The Beast’s clutches, building a series of mechanical ball-retrieving machines that get progressively more complicated and goofier as The Beast grows in size in their imaginations.~ Anthony Reed, All Movie Guide
