In an essay that went viral, “Edward Schlosser” (pseudonym) described his plight as a public school teacher who lived in constant fear of offending his hypersensitive students. He talked a lot about the politics of personal testimony, and then pumped his hands to confirm that he really was a liberal. The end result was “complete nonsense,” as a British friend of mine put it, and yet very compelling, confirming everything that fragile white men feared about a world run by angry feminists (
Nice guy in his position, though, and what you end up with is a grape that boils down to: EAT THE BEGGARS TO MY LOL. Because “public school” is code for a crowd of students eager to get a diploma. Even hiding behind a name, Schlosser added a trick. To deflect any internet ire, to bash his misunderstood anonymous persona, he included a tweet from a black critic (Minority! Female! Outspoken!), making him the face of everything he felt was wrong with the life of the mind today. That is, as far as he is concerned, he is in the wrong body type.
Without thinking, he hurled himself into the internet’s metaphorical jaws, serving red meat to the shredder of resentment by belching the latest Jerry Seinfeld. With a depressing outlook, he immediately began receiving death threats. Vox editors must have caught Schlosser’s trap, but when the attacks became too vicious to ignore, they removed the link and added a vague apology at the end of the piece.
Poetic justice, then, and kudos to Vox for publishing the rebuttals of two academics who deftly debunked Schlosser’s accusations while showing the daily courage to say what needs to be said. The first rejection came from Amanda Taub, a former associate professor who had no job security and no hope of making it. The second came from Koritha Mitchell, the titular black professor whose presence in academia turns her into a walking bulwark against racism. They spoke knowing that their real lives would bear the consequences of their words, and they clearly identified the true nature of Schlosser’s fear: the corporatization of academia.
The Real World Behind
The fundamental flaw in Schlosser’s essay was that he was rehearsing an old canard called “killing”. Here is an explanation from a blog called “Reasonable Conversation”: “Killing is a concept that assumes you have a measurable level of power and are looking for a fight. Now you can either go after the big guy who can hurt you, or you can go after the little guy who doesn’t have a shot. Either way, you have chosen a fight, but one fight is far nobler and more valuable than the other. , is an act of nobility. Going after a little boy, hitting him is an act of bullying.’
What Schlosser really fears is losing his job. Nowadays, who doesn’t? But it is intellectually dishonest to lay this fear at the feet of “liberal” students, when it really stems from the new status of minimum-wage academics, as the newest and most deluded members of that economic class have called “precarity.” Students do not hire or fire teachers. The Institution Works: Today, higher education is an institution run by boards of directors who see it as a business, and claim tenure as the remaining barrier to greater returns. Now that teachers are the occupational equivalent of fast food workers, the Administration has no financial interest in maintaining a defective work unit when it is cheaper to replace it.
The latest flawed unit appears to be Sir Tim Hunt — a Nobel Prize-winning Knight of the Empire — reminding us that misogyny is alive and well and thriving in petri dishes wherever Visa is accepted. At the World Conference of Science Journalists in South Korea, she explained her problem with “girls” (that is, women) in science: “Three things happen when they’re in the lab: you fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticize them, they cry.”
Twitter exploded with its usual bipolar mix of brilliant sarcasm and four-letter WTF, and the media followed suit. After an unclassical apology, Hunt resigned his honorary position at University College London. Being the man he is, he didn’t shed a girl’s tear as he turned down an unpaid position that meant nothing, specifically to a 72-year-old scientist past retirement age.

No one compromised the integrity of their research. This attention did not harm his pension, but his pride. It seems to be forgotten that women are fed up with not getting job opportunities in science, and are instead invisibly chewed up and spit out like so much food sacrificed to the male ego. After seven decades of self-proclaimed “macho pig”, Hunt never considered the wisdom of making room for a new hybrid generation of scientists, some of whom use Twitter and are women, party on the beach and prune quince trees. in his dotage?
