Things To Draw On Canvas
Don’t be intimidated, painting with acrylic paint is not scary at all! Paint is cheap and usually washable. It mixes and matches very well, and is a lot of fun to play with!
Easy Things To Paint For Beginners
I have written an extensive post on how to start painting with acrylics on canvas. I’m sharing all my supplies and links, plus tips I’ve learned along the way.
I am definitely a self-taught artist. Back in college, a friend let me paint with her oils and I was hooked. I loved watching the colors mix and mingle and become big abstract paintings.
I later learned that acrylics are just as much fun and a small part of the hassle. They dry in a reasonable amount of time, the brushes wash out with water, and cost much less.
Some people want a step by step tutorial and other people just want ideas to get their juices flowing. I’m definitely the latter, but sometimes it’s fun to learn new techniques by watching someone.

I thought I’d also include examples of some of the simple canvas paintings I’ve done in the past. They’re all incredibly easy, and most of them were really quick (and satisfying!) projects.
Mark Rothko was an influential American abstract painter in the 1950s and 1970s. His signature style is basically abstract rectangles of color. I fell in love with his art when I was in college, and can only dream of owning a real piece of his one day, as there are millions!
But his style is fun and relatively easy to replicate. He Picks some shades and paints some rectangles! The edges are never perfect and the rectangles can be next to each other or spaced out, like I did.
Sunrise and sunset paintings are always fun, and if you paint it as an ocean scene, you get a lovely warm/cool color contrast. These are easy paintings to do, just do a gradient of warm colors for the sky and then blue for the ocean.

I once heard in a painting class that there is a barely visible red line at the edge of the horizon, so I added it here, along with a deep dark blue line just below.
Silhouette paintings can be so much fun to do, and sunsets and the desert are perfect subjects for them! This painting was created using yellow, red, and blue acrylic paint and mixing them together to create a sunset. Once it has dried, use black paint to create a horizon with mountains and some cacti in the foreground and background. Simple!
To continue the desert vibes, to create a similar painting, all you have to do is pick a color palette. I chose red oxide for the mountains and yellow ocher for the sky. To create the layered mountain look, start by painting the sky, then add the mountain in the back using the lightest shade, and add layers of mountains in progressively darker shades.
This painting was so much fun to do. I wanted the shape of a heart to be somewhat visible, but with lots of abstract lines behind it and spots of color. I mainly used warm colors on one side and cool colors on the other, to symbolize me, my husband, and our marriage. It hung over our bed for a while.

This type of painting is fun to do with kids, but it can also be done in a cool, abstract way and can also be hung in a living room, bedroom, or bathroom. Start with to create a paint resistant tape. a blank canvas and use masking tape or masking tape to create a design, a kind of crazy web. Then paint on the exposed areas and remove the tape when partially dry.
I got the idea for this type of canvas painting when I was browsing in a furniture store. I thought it would be cool to paint the coral abstractly so I did the first one in a beautiful reddish peach coral. It was a bit lonely on its own, so I added more canvases with the other colors, and I love how it turned out. It’s perfect for a bathroom!
To recreate them, start at the bottom with the base stem and work your way up, using smooth right angles and branches.
Painting canvases for my children’s nurseries was where it all began for me. I loved painting matching patterns on their cribs. I have a full tutorial here on how to make a matching canvas decoration.
