“Appaloosa,” Ed Harris does almost everything in the classic Western, which he co-wrote, produced and directed and stars alongside Viggo Mortensen. Harris and Mortensen play longtime partners in a law-for-hire game who sign on to rid a city of spies working for a murderous boss (Jeremy Irons). Renee Zellweger is flat as a flying widow who complicates the friendship of the good guys. (BBC) The suds that spread through Tyler Perry’s The Family That Preys are more like the cubic footage from nighttime soaps like Dallas, Dynasty and their offspring.
While it’s great to see actors as disgusting as Woodard and Bates on the big screen, they can’t even make sense of [these] inscrutable characters.

The Family that Preys takes a major step forward in the film education of playwright Tyler Perry. It’s also his soapiest film yet, an overwrought melodrama of sibling rivalry, infidelity, family business power plays and terminal illness.
As usual, the bad guys are the bad guys, and the good guys are very noble — until they go crazy and get married to their wives.
Old-school and undeniably entertaining, The Family That Preys is a double-glazed throwback to 1950s melodrama like Giant, those wellsprings of prime-time soaps like Dallas and Dynasty .
Although at times the film flowed like a soap opera with its dramatic couplets and heavy moments, it held your attention.

It’s three of Tyler Perry’s trademarks: sincerity, spirituality, and story. And if it provides those other “s” — subtlety — fine.
Woodard is the best thing about the campaign. If she is not in this thing, I think it will go kaput.
As always, there’s a moral: Faith and family are the main virtues, and lust and greed are duly punished, though Perry is getting better at hiding his treatment.
Just the kind of preaching, pandering, tone-shifting, soapy gospel [Perry] has served up over and over again to his niche audience.

(Tyler) Perry, a one-man cinematic band who wrote the script, produced, directed and played a devoted husband and construction worker, always growing as a filmmaker.
I appreciate what Perry is trying to do with his movies, and it’s nice to see an urban movie that isn’t a “Gangsta Picture”, but he needs to tone down the soap opera qualities and let his stories develop naturally. Tyler Perry wrote, directed, produced and stars in this gripping drama about a scandal that ravages two families with a long history. One is upper class, the other working class, and each is led by a strong matriarch who is a longtime friend. Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard are fantastic as the two women trying to keep their families from countless lives. The ensemble cast also includes Sanaa Lathan, Cole Hauser, Rockmond Dunbar and Kadee Strickland.
