Warriors Of The Wind Movie – I think you’ll never forget your first Studio Ghibli film. I have friends who remember watching My Neighbor Totoro as a child and want to get on the cat bus. I have also met people who loved the environmental message of Princess Mononoke without realizing that a lesson was being taught. It’s hard not to imagine that many anime fans have fond memories of their first Studio Ghibli films, because they’re all great.

I too have many fond memories of my first film at Studio Ghibli. But not because it’s a magical experience. I remember because it was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

Warriors Of The Wind Movie

Warriors Of The Wind Movie

Okay, technically Ghost Warriors isn’t a Studio Ghibli movie. Its original name is actually Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds. Also, the film was made even before Studio Ghibli was assembled. However, it was the film that laid the groundwork for Hayao Miyazaki, who wrote and directed Nausicaa, to found the prolific anime studio we know today. I wouldn’t be surprised if they use the profits of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind to actually fund Studio Ghibli! For most fans, it’s not just a Studio Ghibli film, it’s also the anime studios’ first film.

Does Anybody Else Find The Original English Poster For Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind Hilarious?

So what exactly are the Spirit Warriors? In short, the bastard version of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. You have to understand that the western audience did not accept the anime when the movie came out. I’m not saying they aren’t. Many fans have had the opportunity to watch the likes of Robotech, Captain Harlock and the Millennium Queen, Speed Racer and Astro Boy. I mean, Western viewers didn’t understand that anime isn’t just for kids. A lot of anime was seriously dumb when it came to the west. That’s how things were before.

I watched the Spirit Warriors on local TV one evening. He showed up and I said, “Hey, great! Cartoon!” To be fair, I think I was around 14. If you think that’s too old to watch cartoons, you’re on the wrong site! Anyway, I hunkered down and watched the whole thing. I might have skipped the intro scene so I had no idea about the setting, because it was all revealed by a voiceover guy. But what I saw was so bad it was good. And he doesn’t even know he was murdered by western distributors!

First, the wind warriors had really weird dubbing. More specifically, most of the lines sounded weird. There were scenes where Nausicaa, or Princess Zandra (yikes) as the case may be, asked the “spirits” to help her. Also, Princess Zandra (yikes) has a weird country accent that just doesn’t suit her.

Of course, my favorite line is when Lord Yupa attacked one of his airships and the commander said, “This is Lord Yupa! If you kill him, you’ll be famous!” It seems like a weird thing to say, and even weirder that they kept that line when Disney translated it! Maybe they thought it was too stupid to change. But my second favorite line would be Princess Zandra (yikes) in the Warriors of the Wind dub where she stopped baby Ohmo or Gorgon and burned her foot because of an “acid lake”. Later, when Ohmo/Gorgon said he was feeling better and “satisfied”, I literally burst out laughing. There was something about delivering that particular line that tickled me.

Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind: If I Lived In This World, I Would Be A Bug

I don’t remember much about the movie. I remember enjoying it, it really looks nice! You have to understand that most of the anime I watched back then was from shows like Star Blazers, Grendizer, and Voltron. Let’s not call the animations of these shows poor quality, but compared to “Ghost Warriors” they looked like crap! The world looks so creative and colorful! The animation was also extremely fluid!

Even so, Wind Warriors was a mess. The super good visuals couldn’t overcome how bad the dubbing was. Although I don’t remember much of the actual story, what I do remember very well was going to school the next day and talking to my friends about the Spirit Warriors and how bad it was! I vividly remember one of my friends mocking with his hands the gesture of the “mighty Gorgons” and how we were going to make fun of Nausicaa, sorry “Princess Zandra” and her way of speaking.

In retrospect, Spirit Warriors wasn’t so bad… for its time. Oh, it certainly has a lot of problems, even if you don’t compare it to the original Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. But taken on its own, the story still feels easy to follow but rather boring. The animation is really good and I’m glad they kept all the original music. I really can’t imagine not knowing the song Nausicaa Requiem, AKA “Na-Na-Nana”. However, as a whole, Spirit Warriors does not hold up and is definitely a poor representation of Hayao Miyazaki’s work.

Warriors Of The Wind Movie

Even though Wind Warriors is crap in retrospect, I’m really glad they did such a ridiculous translation. When Hayao Miyazaki heard about the Wind Warriors, he was upset about what they did to Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Therefore, he decided that neither he nor Studio Ghibli wanted his work cut or edited in any way. He never entertained the idea of any Western studio releasing his work outside of Japan until Disney came along and promised not to edit their work in any way. A company like Disney should have recognized the great work of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, and it would be ridiculous to make any changes to it.

The Three Nausicaäs

It might seem really sad that Ghost Warriors was my first encounter with Studio Ghibli. But to tell the truth, I’m actually satisfied. Of course, I got the ruddy stepchild version of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. But the fact that I still remember my friends talking about it and making fun of it is something I will always remember as a good memory. And isn’t it more important to have this pleasant memory than to watch a really good movie?
