Shrek and the donkey arrive at Farquaad’s castle in Duloc, where they enter a contest. The winner gets the “right” to rescue Fiona so Farquaad can marry her. Shrek and Donkey easily beat the other knights in a wrestling match, and Farquaad agrees to release the fairy creatures from his swamp if Shrek saves Fiona.
Shrek and Donkey go to the castle and split up to find Fiona. A donkey meets a dragon and talks sweetly to the beast before learning to be a woman. The dragon loves him and drives him to his chambers. Shrek finds Fiona, who is surprised by the lack of love. As they leave, Shrek rescues the donkey, who is caught in the Dragon’s tender ropes, and causes him to chase them all out of the castle. At first Fiona is happy to be rescued, but is soon disappointed when Shrek takes off his helmet and reveals himself to be an ogre.

When Donkey hears a strange noise coming from it, he notices that Fiona has turned into an ogre. He explains his childhood curse and transforms every night, that’s why he was imprisoned, and only his true love will bring him back to “the true way of love”. Shrek, about to confess his feelings for Fiona in Sunflower, overhears her, and is hurt when she mistakes his anger at her transformation into an “evil beast” as hatred for her. Fiona makes the donkey promise not to tell Shrek and vows to do it himself, but when morning comes, Shrek brings Lord Farquaad to Fiona. The pair return to Duloc, while a sad Shrek abandons his friendship with Donkey and returns to his now abandoned swamp, remembering what Fiona “said” about him.
Despite his privacy, Shrek is sad and misses Fiona. Enraged by Shrek, the donkey comes to the swamp where Shrek overhears the conversation between Donkey and Fiona. Donkey keeps his promise to Fiona and tells Shrek that he was talking about someone else. He accepts Shrek’s apology and tells him that Fiona is getting married soon, urging Shrek to do something to win Fiona’s love. They hurried to Duloc, thanks to the Dragon, who ran after them and followed the donkey.
Shrek interrupts the wedding before Farquaad can kiss Fiona. She tells him that Farquaad is not her true love and marries him to become king. The sun goes down, turning Fiona into an ogre in front of everyone in the church, causing Shrek to fully understand what he heard. Farquaad, disgusted by Fiona, orders Shrek killed and Fiona imprisoned. Shrek whistles and the Dragon rushes in with the Donkey and eats Farquaad. When DreamWorks was founded, producer John H. Williams got his hands on the book for his children and when he brought it to DreamWorks, it caught the attention of Jeffrey Katzenberg and the studio decided to turn it into a movie.
Steven Spielberg had thought about making a classic film adaptation of the book when he bought the rights to the book in 1991 before the founding of DreamWorks, in which Bill Murray would play Shrek and Steve Martin would play Donkey.
At the beginning of production, co-director Andrew Adamson refused to be intimidated by Katzenberg and argued with him about how much the film should appeal to adults. Katzenberg wanted both audiences, but he thought that some of Adamson’s ideas about adding sex jokes and Guns N’ Roses music to the soundtrack were too outrageous.
Adamson and Kelly Asbury joined in 1997 to co-produce the film. However, Asbury left a year later to work on the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and was replaced by story artist Vicky Jenson. Both Adamson and Jenson decided to work on the film in pairs so that the crew would at least know who to turn to with specific questions about the film’s sequence; “In the end, we both did a lot,” Adamson said. “We both have little control and we both want to do everything.”
