The Divergent Series: Allegiant:’ First Trailer Shows Life Beyond The Wall
And some, like The Divergent Series: Allegiant, make a change in you when you realize for the first time what it means to have a cinema that is not made for you. This is a series of four films. Allegiant is the third of four films and the first of a two-part finale. It’s a cinematic release structure that demands intense loyalty, on par with The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and Twilight.
I can’t figure out what draws people to this franchise though. What is the escapist fantasy or connection to the real world that has given this story a four-film franchise and millions of dollars in salaries for cast and crew, special effects and advertising?
Does the appeal simply confirm that “feeling different” is something legitimately special? Is it possible that Divergent legitimizes every bookish teenager and their sense of being better than their cliquey peers? Because if it is, I’ve been there and it’s something you don’t want to reinforce – trust me. But there’s enough in the world of young adult fiction to back it up, with every prophetically chosen and revolutionary hero ever. What makes it so massive?
To say I’m confused by the success of the Divergent series is an understatement. I have absolutely no idea what inspires the devotion that took us all the way to the third film.
Divergent Series Four Book Paperback Box Set: Divergent, Insurgent, Allegiant, Four
The aforementioned third film, Allegiant, picks up seemingly after the end of every other young adult franchise – the attractive teenage rebels have overthrown their evil authoritarian dictators and must now rebuild society in post-apocalyptic Chicago. The hero of the revolution, Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley), has chosen to take a backseat role as Evelyn Johnson (Naomi Watts), mother of Tris’ main squeeze, Four (Theo James), undergoes the standard post-revolution purge. of the old guard, mostly by executing the old guard. .
Tired of this, Tris leaves Chicago for the world outside, thanks to a message received at the end of the previous film, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, which spoke of the aforementioned world (the one that created their society as a vaguely defined experiment and still existed) beyond . Together with the four and a group of one-note characters played by excellent young actors (Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz and Ansel Elgort), she discovers that the society that created their entire world as an experiment: the Genetic Protection Agency. The agency’s dark secrets must be revealed to save Chicago and the world Tris loves.
And frankly, the nonsense contained in Allegiant didn’t help either. Later it turns into a giant gas injection plan (because kids remember, nothing is more cinematic than air slowly creeping over people, and there aren’t 100 movies that have done that before) and the thing where the villain keeps popping up up on different screens, taunt is a hero as they try to stop her.
Specifically, Allegiant seems to steal blockbuster tropes more extensively in an attempt to give this film some sort of closure (avoiding the problems of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1). Admirable but misguided as it largely serves to genericize this film. As a whole, the series remains little more than a bizarre collection of dystopian tropes drawn from Gattaca and The Giver with a romantic focus and the design aesthetic of The Hunger Games.

But let’s talk about that design aesthetic for a moment. Whatever there is to say about the storytelling in the Hunger Games franchise, you can’t fault the production design of these films. Every piece of Panem seemed to have a purpose, a reason, and a story. Aside from a few errant bits of noticeable CGI, everything was impeccably crafted and staged.
Not having delved into Allegiant in the slightest, I couldn’t help but sit back and stare at how cheap this movie looks overall. It’s dominated by a shockingly amateurish green screen that seems to paper-cut the actors and paste them into the background, like a third-rate art project on plastic CGI backgrounds. It abounds with sparse designs that seem designed either “because we’re sci-fi” or because they had to speed up production rather than any purposeful design aesthetic. There is nothing interesting to see on the screen.
That is, apart from the actors, who represent the most unusual contrast in this film. Let me be clear: these characters are nothing. Part design and part sheer stupidity, it’s all thin sketches and outlines seemingly lifted from the third edition of So You Want to Make a Ridiculous Amount of Money
