
What Are The New Genders – You can choose the floor marker you would like printed on your US passport. The floor you choose does not necessarily have to match the gender listed on supporting documents such as a birth certificate, previous passport or state ID. We no longer require medical documentation to change the floor marking on your US passport.
Currently, you can select male (M), female (F), unspecified, or other gender identity (X) as your gender marker if you are applying for a US passport book and selecting regular service. You can submit the application in person at the passport office or continue it by mail.
What Are The New Genders
Starting in late 2023, you’ll be able to select X as a marker if you’re requesting expedited or urgent service. You can also request (X) the following documents that we issue:

Visit our Passport Forms page for more information on which form to use. Children under the age of 16 must always apply using Form DS-11 and be present in person accompanied by both parents or legal guardians.
Americans’ Complex Views On Gender Identity And Transgender Issues
You do not need to provide any documents (medical or otherwise) to change your gender, even if the gender you indicated in the application does not match the gender in your previous passport or other documents. Follow the steps on the Apply in Person page.
Under our previous passport policy, if you were in the process of moving to a new floor when you applied for a passport, you could have received a passport with limited validity (issued for less than 10 years for those aged 16 and over) and five years for children under 16). We no longer need medical documents or a doctor’s note as proof of gender change.
To replace a passport with limited validity for a passport with full validity, file Form DS-5504. To use this form, you must apply within two years of the date of issue of the previous passport. You do not need to pay fees unless you request an additional expedited service. The requirements for reassigning your child’s gender are the same as for an adult. Both parents or legal guardians must give consent when applying for a child under the age of 16.
