After playing the game, I’m not so sure that Gollum will reach the heights of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its innovative nemesis system, but it will definitely be an authentic take on the original source material that lore fans will enjoy. . trans.
This is largely thanks to the game’s co-author Damiri Knapheide, the studio’s resident Tolkien expert, who is in the process of writing a PhD on the author. And he’s not that worried about competition from other upcoming games and media.
“As a fan, I like to see more,” he said. “We’re definitely coming this year, but now it’s polishing. The other games and movies? I’m not so worried about them, because we’re really in the tunnel, we have to get our thing and we have to get it. to the market.

Platforming, or parkour as Daedalic calls it, has an almost Tomb Raider or Prince of Persia feel. Gollum can dash up walls as well as down them, and jumping between platforms is methodical and deliberate rather than a grueling test of speed. Stealth sections are a bit basic – throw rocks to distract enemies, duck underwater to avoid their gaze – but have a similarly enigmatic feel to them.
And then there are the puzzles themselves. One elaborate sequence has Gollum raising a specific kind of bird, leading me to check wall art for clues about the right order of events: the right egg color, the right temperature, the right place. Overall, the game has a nice thoughtful and slow pace in keeping with Gollum’s character and abilities.
Unfortunately, this is harmed by permanent death. Missing a jump or falling off a wall? death Get spotted by a big-eyed elf? to fail I never felt like I got into the rhythm of the game or was left free to explore its sometimes gorgeous world. There are often branching paths that give the illusion of choice – the stealth approach, or the platform approach – but in any case the game is restrictive and almost scripted. Daedalic is so – dare I say – about Gollum, to offer a specific experience, it seems afraid to just let players enjoy the world.

The duality of the protagonist is cleverly used in certain places to provide multiple options on how to proceed. In the short term, the result is an alternative dialogue, but Daedalic promises wider reaching implications for player choice. I just couldn’t witness that in the short preview period.
“People will die, or live,” Knafede said. And players will be able to define the story themselves. “You can have allies, you can treat people badly, you can lie, you can manipulate. That’s what Gollum does.”
It is really the game’s authenticity to Tolkien’s book world that impresses the most. The art style is fresh but familiar, whether it’s the lush and green elven palaces or the dark interiors of Barad-dûr in Mordor, where the eye-shaped architecture suggests that Gollum is always watching. This is despite Gollum looking similar to his Peter Jackson counterpart, even with his cross eyes.

As Knapheide said, despite the studio’s desire to reach out to fans of both books and movies, their hands were tied for legal reasons — the rights to Jackson’s movies are separate from Tolkien’s books.
“We chose to develop our own art style, which is more or less Gollum’s way of looking at Middle Earth,” Knafeide said. “So you’re not necessarily seeing the deluxe version of Middle Earth, but you’re seeing the deluxe version of Gollum’s version of Middle Earth.
“Then our artists chose a style that is – I think – a more artistic approach that is more suitable for a book.”
According to folklore, the Lord of the Rings story: Gollum sits between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. And that both provides a framework for the plot and allows room for play.

“Even though very prominent figures talk about [this time frame], like Gandalf, he doesn’t know exactly what happened,” Knafeide said. “During this time Gollum travels and has many experiences and revivals.
He continued: “But of course we tried to adhere as closely as possible to [the doctrine]. For me, this is a hyper, hyper-sensitive issue.
“We have to deliver Gollum at the door and say ‘Okay, now the Lord of the Rings main story takes over’ because you know he’s going to follow the company later. So we have a beginning and an end. Let’s say that. that’s the definition of the barriers we have. And in that we can make the story. But it’s a sad story, a little melancholic, and sometimes very moving.”
Knapheide admits this is fun to delve into for someone writing a doctoral thesis on Tolkien. “It’s about imagination, the function of language to create images to open up imaginary worlds and centered on The Lord of the Rings,” Knafeide said. “Well, if I ever finish it!”
