What Is The First Lord Of The Rings Book – Movies one by one and all in their extended editions (the only way to watch movies, which will be assumed throughout this post). That’s about 21 hours of movie time, not to mention breaks for cooking meals, routine walks, sleeping and other necessities. But during my viewing, the question remains: What is the correct viewing order for these six films? A series I’ll call the Tolkien Hexology, for lack of a better word.
After the film was released, an article appeared on medium.com that provided several possible viewing sequences in addition to the obvious chronological options for the story (
What Is The First Lord Of The Rings Book
), which is how I see them for more than two days in the last week, or the release order (
J. R. R. Tolkien. The Lord Of The Rings, Comprising: The Fellowship
) but none of the media article orders worked for me and I was wondering if there was a watch order that would solve some of my viewing issues.
(as is probably not understood without having seen those movies, etc.) just as the justifiably famous Machete Order made the Star Wars prequels worth watching.
So what I’m going to cover in this post is my machete-inspired Tolkien hexology viewing order, but just as Rod Hilton started his machete order article with some disclaimers, I felt I had to deal with the elephant in the room first…
Peter Jackson told us there was a problem. It is very long, contains a lot of material that is not in the original book (although this material is suggested or written

, took what was needed in the last 20 or so pages of the book and expanded it into a two-and-a-half-hour-plus movie with a fight scene that attempted to go through both Helm’s Deep and Pelennor Field, though it didn’t satisfy. Get both.
For purists and those who want to see versions of the movies that better reflect the actual book, I suggest you download one of the following fan edits and watch it instead and follow it up with the original.
However, if you’re like me, a cinema purist and try to find the good in what you’re given, then I’d like to make a case for it.
The movie that Peter Jackson gave us. However, I fully acknowledge their shortcomings. So here are some commonly cited issues and why I defend them:
Magic: The Gathering Reveals Its First Lord Of The Rings Cards
Film, and I think part of that criticism stems from the dual fact that he is a) completely different from the original source material (ie just Tolkien’s original novel, itself) with several changes that reflect the evolved world that Tolkien was envisioning in the original films; After delivering a masterful level of adaptation and b) relying more on CGI
: Create a groundbreaking and beloved trilogy to follow it with a mediocre prequel series by comparison. Regardless, though,
The movies exist, and if you want to watch the entire Tolkien Hexalogy, my personal recommendation is to watch them in the following order…
I really wish I could have a name that sounded cool like Machete Order, but alas, no way. But without further ado, here’s my suggested viewing order:
The Lord Of The Rings Tolkien First Editions
This arrangement solves the biggest problem with story sequencing: too many events that an audience member is supposed to know.
Told as a flashback of old Bilbo documenting his journey and preparing for 111
Trilogy, that almost everything about the premise goes through their heads, including the return plot of the Necromancer and Sauron. Also, the whole reason
Gollum’s Ring as Satan is not directly mentioned in the film, but is assumed to be familiar to the audience.
First Look At The Orcs From ‘the Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power’
The second problem this order solves is that if you watch the movies in release order, which solves the story order problem, you’ll end up
. It’s a pretty weak movie to end on, plus the film has nothing to do with the larger story of Rings of Power, which you’ve seen three movies before for a much more fitting ending. For the full story Furthermore, the end
Also wraps up Bilbo’s story, so you’ll see the end of his story before you know the full story.
Acts as a “prologue” to the entire series, setting up something necessary for it
How To Watch All The Lord Of The Rings Movies In Order
Finally, what this order also achieves is a sequence of three great battles arranged in a unique way: the Battle of the Five Armies, the Battle of Helm’s Deep, and the Battle of Pelennor Fields. So the first three movies are like a composite story that builds into an all-out war and then it explodes at the end.
Now, with this new viewing order in place, the question is how does one watch almost 21 hours of movies without getting tired? Well, that’s largely up to you and any brave souls you decide to join you, but my advice is to watch it for three days. You start by showing up
(474 minutes). This will give you plenty of time to take breaks, go for walks, cook and play some games.
Monday (638 minutes), but that may be asking a lot of some people’s schedules and attention spans.
Warner Bros. Turns The First Lord Of The Rings Movie Into A Shockingly Shitty Nft
A big disclaimer: As of this writing, I have yet to watch the movies in this order. When I saw these movies over the Thanksgiving holiday, it was the first time I had seen them
The extended version and my friend and I decided to watch the movie in chronological order of the story. But as we watched them, I was thinking about a better viewing order and discussing possible reasons with my viewing buddy. We’ve both come to the conclusion that the recommended order is best for most viewers looking for an alternative to story order or release order. With that in mind, the next time I sit down to read the Tolkien Hexalogy, I plan to watch them in this new order and probably use it for all subsequent marathons.
But this order is better than release order or story order? I would say yes for the main reasons I mentioned earlier. It is better than the story sequence because all the information is removed
It’s a relatively weak film to release the series, especially since it doesn’t finish the actual meta story of Gandalf and the Ring of Power, and doesn’t even finish Bilbo’s story. Thus, these two main issues of story or release order are solved by shuffling

We see Frodo wake up and a viewer assumes it was a dream. This viewer can then think back to the previous three seasons
The story of Bilbo’s journey is interspersed with various legends of Middle-earth. It might not be the most elegant transition, but it can work with some creative viewing thought.
A First Look At The Lord Of The Rings: Tales Of Middle Earth™
And that’s where my story ends, I think. Try the order next time you look at the Tolkien Hexalogy and let me know what you think. For one, I’m excited to try it again the next time I pull my Blu-ray disc off the shelf and back to Middle-earth., you should know it takes place in the ages. Middle-earth II, when the 19 rings were forged and given to fairies, dwarves, and humans. wait,

Based on this, it might just be faster to watch movies. While many filmmakers have adapted Tolkien’s work over the years (Ralph Boxey’s 1978 animated film The Lord of the Rings shouts out), none have done it quite this well. Peter Jackson, who directed six films in two trilogies dedicated to this subject. In Middle-earth. He even won a few Oscars for doing it.
, so the movie does not have the same actors and many of the characters that the audience knows and loves in the movie. But if you want to soak up the lore of the world, including what’s the deal with all those rings, movies are a great way to fill your mind (or introduce the world). (You are the first time).
