The refrigerator in your unit circulates between the indoor and outdoor units, transferring heat from one room to another. After the refrigerant has dissipated its heat outside, it turns back into a gaseous state and returns indoors. When the refrigerator cools again, the indoor fan blows air over the cooling coils and then circulates the cold air indoors. This cycle is repeated every time the air conditioner is turned on.

The function of the compressor is to pressurize the refrigerant and increase its temperature. Thanks to the law of gas mixtures (a combination of Boyle’s law, Charles’ law, and Gay-Lussac’s law), which states that as pressure increases, so does its temperature, compressing the refrigerant causes it to heat up. This is done by very strong gas compression.

We heat the refrigerator so that its temperature is higher than the outside temperature. Because heat naturally flows from a warmer room to a cooler enclosure to remove heat outside, the refrigerator must be warmer than the outside air. So we need a compressor to increase the pressure and therefore the temperature.
