Microsoft last updated the Xbox 360 in 2010. The so-called Xbox 360 S added some significant upgrades to the 360, including built-in Wi-Fi, a larger hard drive, and a smaller chassis. More importantly, the 360 S was quieter and featured a new hardware design that eliminated the infamous “red ring of death” overheating problem that had plagued the 360 since it was first introduced in 2005.
The Xbox 360 E offers a fantastic collection of media and games with slightly quieter operation than previous 360 models.
The 360 E loses the optical audio output found on previous Xbox models; missing blu-ray drive; Almost all online games and entertainment applications require an annual subscription to Xbox Live Gold; Older 360 hardware/software bundles hold up better. The new Xbox One is just around the corner.

The Xbox 360 remains a great video and gaming console, but fans will be better served with older 360 bundles – or waiting for the Xbox One.
For 2013, Microsoft introduced another version of the 360, known as the Xbox 360 E. But when its successor, the Xbox One, hits stores in November — along with its biggest rival, the PlayStation 4 — is there any reason to invest? A new 360 at $300? So even if you go for the 360, is the latest model the biggest shock for you? I spent some time with the 360 E and here’s what I found.
Slightly smaller (I’m talking millimeters here) than 2010’s Xbox 360 S, the 360 E features only a few aesthetic design changes. For starters, it’s designed to match the styling of the Xbox 360’s upcoming successor, the Xbox One. . The 360 E shares a similar gloss and matte mix with angled grills on top and sides for ventilation.
On the rear panel, the all-important HDMI connection is still there, but the multi-AV output jack is gone. Instead, all that’s left is a jack for the 1/8-inch AV cable. A composite cable (yellow video plus red/white stereo audio) comes in the box, but you’ll need to find a component for HD. The good news is that the cables are no longer shielded. Bad news? Still, to this day you can’t play Xbox 360 in HD straight out of the box without getting your own cables

Microsoft has removed some of the versatile connectivity interfaces present on the 360 S – which is a real shame. Gone is the dedicated optical audio output found on previous 360 models This means the only way to get surround sound is through an HDMI connection If you’re like me and have an old AV receiver that can’t accept audio via HDMI, you may be in trouble.
If that’s not enough, the Xbox 360 E actually removes the USB port as well. You probably won’t feel the impact of only having four ports (two front, two back) as opposed to five, but when you’re paying the same price as the 360 S, one would assume all parts would be intact.
Another small difference: the touch power on and off controls from the 360 S have been replaced with more traditional physical buttons.
However, there are some things that survived the journey from S to E. The 360 E retains the elusive infrared port (so, unlike the PS3 without IR, you can still use the standard remote) and a removable hard drive (you’ll still have to use a Microsoft model, not just a standard laptop HDD).

What else is different? Not too much. The 360 E can stand horizontally or vertically. The power slot is a different shape, but the built-in power cube from the S is still present. Ethernet and Wi-Fi are still included for online connectivity, and the dedicated Kinect port remains.
The Microsoft E console debuted saying it would be cool and cool. In a few weeks with it, I’ve noticed both of these things to be true, but nowhere near as dramatic an improvement from the “classic” white 360 (2005 version) to the 360 S (2010 version). If temperature and noise are your two biggest reasons for looking for an upgrade, let me talk you out of it.
The Xbox 360 is the best-selling game console of this generation for good reason The game library is great, with all the best third-party games you’ll find on PS3 (Madden, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin’s Creed, BioShock, Batman: Arkham Asylum and more), plus a handful of original Xbox exclusives like Halo, Gears of War and Forza series, as well as the upcoming Titanfall. Xbox Live Arcade also has a great selection of smaller indie titles to download
The Xbox 360 can still only play DVDs and CDs — Blu-ray movies won’t, as they will on the PS3 and the upcoming PS4 and Xbox One.
Xbox Series X
Both the PS3 and Xbox offer online multiplayer games, but Xbox Live is arguably the larger, more engaged community. The catch is that to play online, you have to upgrade to the Xbox Live Gold plan, which costs $60 per year (though you can often find deals for around $40).
Annoyingly, the Gold plan is also required to access any Xbox entertainment apps. This is unfortunate, as Xbox arguably offers some of the best selection of non-gaming apps, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant, ESPN, Fox Now, Crackle, YouTube, and Vudu. (Full disclosure: There are also apps for many of its CBS Interactive sister properties, including GameSpot and Last.fm). In other words, you’ll have to pay an annual “Xbox Live Tax” to access any service through the 360, including otherwise free services like Crackle and YouTube. Note that you can get many of these services at no extra cost on PS3, Apple TV, Roku, or Chromecast In fact, a Chromecast ($35) or Roku LT ($50) can be yours for less than an annual subscription to Xbox Live Gold.
Xbox One, as far as we know, will also require Xbox Live Gold for online games and entertainment apps. The Sony PS4 will require a similar PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer, but access to entertainment apps like Netflix won’t require PS Plus. (Currently, PS3 online play does not require additional fees.)
Bottom line: If you want to do something fun on the 360 besides playing single-player games, you’ll want to factor an annual subscription to Xbox Live Gold into your plans — or plan to get one of those options instead.
Microsoft Xbox 360 S 250 Gb Console (model 1439) Bundle W/ Controller & 4 Games
Like the 360 S before it, the 360 E comes in several flavors: there’s a 4GB version ($199), a 4GB unit bundled with Kinect ($299), and a 250GB version (without Kinect) for $299. Since you’ll need a healthy amount of storage for all the goodies the Xbox 360 has to offer to download, I can’t really recommend the 4GB version.
As for the 250GB version of the 360 E – it’s hard to recommend either. Note that some teardowns of the console show that the 360 E is a cheaper system to produce, but these savings are by no means passed on to the consumer. The 360 E will set you back the same $299 as its predecessor — despite offering one fewer USB port and no optical output.
Meanwhile, the earlier model 360 S — which has an additional USB and optical digital audio port — is available for the same price or less, sometimes with much more attractive packages. For example, the Spring Value Bundle bundles Darksiders II and Batman: Arkham City for the same price as a new (sans games) 360e. For an Xbox 360 beginner, it’s kind of easy.
Meanwhile, the PlayStation 3 — which again offers Blu-ray capability that the Xbox 360 lacks — is available for $270 to $300, bundled with excellent games such as God of War: Ascension, Uncharted 3, Assassin’s Creed III, and (in September) Grand Theft Auto V, which has a hard disk capacity of up to 500 GB.
