The timeline begins with the franchise’s first film, The Fast and the Furious in 2001. The fairly simple action plot assigns Paul Walker’s undercover cop Brian O’ Conner to take down a gang of car thieves led by Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto. Brian gets involved in illegal street racing, befriends Dom, starts dating his sister (Jordan Brewster’s Mia Toretto), and eventually chooses these relationships. over his duty as a cop. The first film also introduces series chapter viewers to Michelle Rodriguez, who will play Letty Ortiz, Dom’s love interest.
The Turbo Charged Prelude for 2 Fast 2 Furious shows how Brian O’Conner, who is on the run from the police, makes his way from LA to Miami before the events of 2 Fast 2 Furious. There is no dialogue in the six-minute short and a handful of races. It’s an unnecessary scene, but it’s there nonetheless.
The only film of the series without Dom Toretto, 2 Fast 2 Furious includes Roman Pearce (Tyrese GIbson) and Tej Parker (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges). The story follows Brian O’Connor and Pearce as they go undercover to bring down a drug ring in exchange for their criminal records being cleared – a mission that is ultimately successful. It also introduces a new love interest for O’Connor in Eva Mendes’ Monica Fuentes, who reappears only briefly in Fast Five.

The second of the two shorts of the series, Los Bandoleros, is set between Fast 1 and Fast 4, although its exact location in the timeline is never specified. Written and directed by Vin Diesel, Los Bandoleros is set in the Dominican Republic, where Dom lies low after the events of Fast 1. In its 20-minute running time, the film manages to cover oil war, corrupt politics and prison. intermission, ending with a romantic reunion between Dom and Letty. Historically, this is also the first time we see Han Lue facing Sung Kang’s death.
Fast & Furious is the fourth major film of the franchise, although it is ahead of Tokyo Drift (film number three) in history. It is a sequel to Fast 1, set five years later, in which Dom and Brian reunite to take down a drug lord and avenge Letty’s “death”. Dom is arrested and eventually convicted, although Brian, Mia and Tego Leo (Tego Calderon) stop the prison bus on the way to prison. Fast & Furious also introduces Gal Gadot’s Gisele Yashar. This was the Wonder Woman actor’s first major film role.
The third Fast film from director Justin Lin’s smash hit upped the ante with massive set pieces and a massive cast that included Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs. Picking up where Fast & Furious left off, Dom heads to Rio de Janeiro with Mia and Brian after escaping from his prison transport. A familiar story unfolds: they steal and race streetcars while on the run from another government agency, this time Luke Hobbs and the DEA. Eva Mendes’ Monica Fuentes returns in mid-credits to reveal that Letty is alive.
Fast 6 begins with Dom and his crew on the run again. Meanwhile, Hobbs tries to take down a group of mercenaries led by Luke Evans’ Owen Shaw. Hobbs recruits Dom by showing him a photo of Letty, whom Dom believes is dead, and offers him and his crew amnesty in the US. franchise continues. The post-credits scene introduces Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw to the series.
The Fast And The Furious (2001)
The craziest of the Fast films in terms of timeline is the third film in the series, which actually takes place between Fast 6 and 7. The first Fast film has a Dom cameo, directed by Justin Lin, but he mostly revolves around a teenage street racer. Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) and Twinkie (Shad “Bow Wow” Moss), with the series’ Han Lue serving as Sean’s mentor. With $62 million in loot, it is the most successful entry in the series by box office total.
The biggest success in the series to date is Furious 7, which earned more than $350 million – no other Fast film has made $250 million. It is also the most popular with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 82% (five points better than the number two Fast Five). Furious 7 picks up at the end of Tokyo Drift, with Statham’s Deckard Shaw as the main villain. The film was directed by James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring, Aquaman).
This is Brian O’Conner’s last Fast film with Paul Walker, as Walker died during filming. Furious 7 ends with Brian/Walker saying goodbye.
