Matching the updated interior and refreshed design of the smaller flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus features a stunning 6.6-inch AMOLED display. Running Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and featuring a larger battery than before, expect robust endurance and performance while promising extensive software support.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Review: Still My Pick Over The Pixel 6

For most people, we think the best Android phone you can buy is the Galaxy S23 Plus. In fact, it replaces last year’s Galaxy S22 Plus (still a good buy in 2023) at the top of our list. It’s not quite as flashy (or expensive) as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it almost gets there for less money.

In terms of design, it is very similar to its predecessor – and that’s a good thing. We found the flat 6.6-inch AMOLED to look more elegant in person than the S23 Ultra, with perfectly proportioned bezels. In comparison, we found it much more comfortable to hold than the S23 Ultra. And while it’s a large screen, it’s below the two-handed threshold for most people. It also helps that the back of the phone is covered with a special glass texture that doesn’t feel like glass. It’s smooth, but repels oils and isn’t as slippery as the glossy finish on phones like the Pixel 7.

As expected from a Samsung flagship, the performance is absolutely amazing. While there’s no Exynos model this time around, Samsung has teamed up with Qualcomm to create a variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 “for Galaxy” chipset that spans the CPU and GPU slightly for each of the three the phones. In our benchmarking tests, they actually performed slightly better than other Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 phones. Check out our full Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy deep dive for more, but suffice to say, this is one of the fastest and most capable phones you’ll ever buy. It’s a big upgrade from last year’s Galaxy flagship, although we would have liked to see a 12GB RAM SKU this time around, exclusive to the S23 Ultra.

Battery life was also good in our tests, thanks in part to a larger 4,700 mAh cell. We found it easily handled a full day of heavy use, streaming video for hours and hours. With some precautions, it even came close to the two-day mark in some cases. Charging tops out at 45W, which while not the fastest should be enough for most people. We found it charged from 0 to 100% in just one hour. It supports wireless charging at 15W, but unless you buy Samsung’s wireless charger, most charge with Qi charging at 10W. Google Pixel 6 Review

If you want a premium smartphone that can do it all, the Galaxy S23 Plus is for you.

While the Galaxy S23 Plus doesn’t quite match the Galaxy S23 Ultra in terms of camera performance, it’s definitely a shooter. It has the same sensors as the previous model, and still produces great images. Samsung’s setup improves images in this case and we found all three lenses useful, making it one of the best all-round camera phones you can buy. If you want to take things a step further, Samsung’s Expert Raw mode lets you process photos manually. That said, the Galaxy S23 Ultra doesn’t get the 200MP main shooter it got this year, so low-light performance was worse in our tests.

In terms of software, Samsung’s One UI is one of the most fully featured Android skins you can find. It has everything and a sink – almost to the detriment. During our testing, we found quite a few pre-installed apps, and while most can be uninstalled, many cannot. Despite this small feature, you can do a lot to make your phone look and work the way you want. It also has unique integration with Samsung wearables such as the Galaxy Watch 5, with some features exclusive to Samsung phones.

Another big selling point is Samsung’s unbeatable software support, which now offers a full five years of security updates and four years of Android version updates. No Android brand can match this, not even Google itself. If you’re looking for a premium smartphone that can do it all without pushing the $1,000 MSRP, you should get the Galaxy S23 Plus.

While we think the Galaxy S23 Plus is the best Android phone for most people, there are plenty of other great options. If you’re looking for a little more space, here are our top picks for the rest:

Pixel 7 is the flagship Pixel for everyone. It offers the next generation Google processor, some great specs and an affordable price. If you want a bigger screen and even better cameras, you can upgrade to the Pixel 7 Pro.

It’s no surprise to see Google release a list of the best Android phones, but the Google Pixel 7 occupies a very unique position. It’s not as premium as the Galaxy S23 Plus above, but it hits all the key points while retaining value and value unmatched by any other device. You won’t find a better phone for this price without getting into Apple devices, and then there are some major flaws. It took second place in our Editors’ Choice Awards for 2022, behind only its bigger sibling, the Pixel 7 Pro.

The Pixel 7 has launched the second iteration of Google’s in-house Tensor chip, which we’re happy to announce is another win for the company. It’s more focused on machine learning and image processing than raw power, but in our tests we found it performed well in everyday tasks. We didn’t experience any lag when scrolling or playing demanding games, but it does heat up quickly. That means consistent performance and excellent battery life.

The Best Android Phones For 2023

Speaking of battery life, the Pixel 7 does well, and depending on your usage, you can reach two full days on a charge. However, charging is painfully slow, taking an hour and 41 minutes to charge in our test. We also noticed that the battery drains quickly, especially when taking photos and videos with the new cinema mode. There is no charger in the box, which unfortunately is par for the course for new releases. The software is again a big plus, offering plenty of Pixel-specific features. That list will only grow over time.

Like all Pixel phones, the Pixel 7 puts special emphasis on photography and keeps things as simple as possible. After a lot of testing, we found this to be one of the best camera phones ever. Exposure, colors and detail were all excellent in a variety of conditions, although very low-light shots were a bit grainy. There’s also no telephoto lens – you’ll need the Pixel 7 Pro for that.

Ultimately, the Pixel 7 isn’t a huge change from the Pixel 6, but in this case, that’s a good thing. There are minor improvements and fixes throughout (the fingerprint sensor is bigger) and it has a very attractive price tag of $599. This makes it one of the cheapest options on our list of best Android phones, and you don’t sacrifice anything.

Powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 as the smaller models in the series, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra offers massive storage capacity and an impressive 200 MP camera. Support for the S Pen and a 6.8-inch screen make the Ultra ideal for taking notes on the go.

The Pixel 7 might offer the best value, but if you want all the bells and whistles, we recommend the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Although you definitely have to pay for it, the Galaxy S series combines the best of the now defunct Note series into the ultimate consumer phone.

Starting with the physical aspects of the phone, the standout feature here is the S Pen. It’s a big part of what makes the Note series a power user’s dream, and it folds away inside the body of the device for easy storage. We were also pleased to see that the S Pen has a rough texture, which makes it easier to hold while browsing, typing or doing anything else.
