Power Rangers, which features teenagers who become superheroes with colorful helmets, has been on the air in one form or another since 1993. That’s 25 years of TV shows and three movies. Let that sink in for a while.

By which we mean, Luke tries to guess what’s going on based on the show’s increasingly vague titles, and Mike tells us what each version of the show was actually about.

Luke: AND Rangers. Rangers of my youth. The original teenagers with attitude, which frankly seems like a pretty bad premise for running a superhero team. Can they even legally get behind the wheel of these giant robots?
Mike: Yeah, if a 16-year-old boy actually got the keys to a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex, we’d all have to run! Power Rangers is based on the Japanese TV show Super Sentai which has been on the air continuously since 1977. Mike: In a sense, you’re absolutely right. This is the first Power Rangers series that is not directly related to the previous season. It’s a move that follows the pattern of Super Sentai, which changes its cast and costumes every year. However, there is a lot of fallout from Power Rangers In Space, connecting ideas and moving actors (Bulk and Alpha 6 are still around).

Mike: Wrong, although Lost Galaxy Rangers does make a movie. This series brings the action back to Earth and is the first series where the Power Rangers do not hide their identities. She is also the first in the series to feature a Ranger who was not the first character in the Japanese “Super Sentai” series – the Titanium Ranger was designed specifically for this show.
