Air Miles: The World’s Most Valuable Airline Frequent Flyer Programs
With air traffic slowly returning to full pre-pandemic capacity, many airlines are now upping the ante on their loyalty programs to appeal to a wider audience and to provide the winning, on-time experience that consumers now expect.
Travel management company Good Travel Management seeks to find which airline offers the best passenger loyalty program and provides a global ranking. To achieve this, standardize the latest data available for each loyalty scheme into relevant categories such as ‘average monthly Google searches’, ‘points expiry’, ‘lounge reviews’ and ‘minimum legroom’ to rank the top 10 airline schemes. world.
It is very positive to see the travel industry starting to recover from the impact of the global pandemic and it will be interesting to see what the airlines offer to entice more members to join their loyalty schemes. Richard Quelch, Group CMO for Good Travel Management
Of the 59 loyalty programs analyzed, MileagePlus and United Airlines took first place with an overall score of 7.85/10. Despite the recent increase in prices on all flights to Europe, MileagePlus still has many ways to earn and redeem miles at the best value of all the airlines surveyed. It has over 100 million members and is famous for its lucrative travel credit card offers.

MileagePlus has the highest positive score for points expiry (10), where points on the scheme have no expiry date. It also gets a near-perfect score for the number of destinations (9.75) it flies, which is 342. It also has one of the highest scores for legroom, with passengers treated to a generous 75 inches of legroom throughout the flight. long-haul flights (9.22).
In second place is Aeroplan with Air Canada (6.53). It regularly offers unique ways for members to earn points, with the company’s latest partnership allowing members to earn points by linking their account to their Uber / Uber Eats account in Canada. Aeroplan’s loyalty program was also recently named the best in its history at the 32nd annual Freddie Awards, when it was named Airline Program of the Year and won Best Promotion and Best Redemption.
In the Good Travel Management survey, the airline had one of the highest global average monthly Google search volume scores of any airline (8.18) with over 368,000 monthly searches. It also has a positive waiting room review score (7) and offers the same ample legroom as MileagePlus. However, it lost its top spot due to its low point expiration (0.25) in just 18 months and lower number of destination options (222 total).
Completing the top three programs is Miles & Smiles with Turkish Airlines (6.23). It has the best lounge review score among the top three airlines (8.57), but loses points due to limited points that only end 36 months. It has significantly less legroom than the top two airlines (6.27), at 60 inches.
Jetblue Ranks At First For The Best Airline Loyalty Program
The loyalty program with the worst rating is Free Spirit (0.73) at Spirit Airlines. This is perhaps not surprising since a recent survey asked which major US airlines Americans would avoid flying with. Spirit Airlines had the dubious honor of finishing first with 21 percent of the vote. Spirit was also named the lowest in passenger satisfaction in the 2023 America’s Customer Satisfaction Index.
Free Spirit received low scores across all categories, with the worst being 0 for the points expiration category, as they are only valid for 12 months. It also scores just 1.2 out of 5 on its airline’s Trustpilot score and only flies to 83 destinations.
Richard Quelch, looks forward to “seeing many exciting innovations and extras added to the program in the coming months which will hopefully make the flight even more memorable and enjoyable for travelers (…)”.
