We have two web surfing tests we ran on Wi-Fi, with the above results being the stronger of the two.
Phones like the OnePlus 5 and LG G6 seem to have a performance floor of around five hours sitting. Like most tests, this supports large batteries and small screens, which is why the Xiaomi Mi 6 works so well.
Larger phones – those with 5.5-inch or larger screens – tend to have lower performance, which is not the case for larger-than-average batteries. The bottom line is that choosing something like the Xiaomi Mi 6 over the OnePlus 5 can give you 85% more battery life.

Our second Wi-Fi surfing test is less intense and more reflective of “real world” web surfing situations. It’s a bit of a mix at the top end, with the Mate 9 taking the lead over the Mi 6, but devices like the LG G6 and HTC U11 still falling behind. The average result on this test is around eight hours, so phones like the G6 don’t hold up well.
In the same test, switching from Wi-Fi to 4G LTE negatively affected battery life for every phone in our test group except the Huawei P10. However, the overall order of the phone’s performance remains the same.
On average, battery life drops by 16% when switching from Wi-Fi to LTE. If you think you’re saving battery by disabling Wi-Fi for data transfer, think again.
The Exynos Galaxy S8+ dropped significantly at 27%, while the Snapdragon flagships tended to drop steadily in the 19 and 24 percent range. This supports most reports suggesting that the integrated modem in Snapdragon SoCs is more efficient than its Exynos counterpart, but only marginally.
Best Android Phone With Removable Battery 2023
The latest browser test we tested was Basemark Web 3.0, a processor-intensive workload that pushes phones to their limits on the CPU and GPU fronts. Despite costing $500, the Moto Z2 Play succeeds here because it doesn’t have a high-end SoC. Instead, the Snapdragon 626 uses its low performance to reduce power consumption to its advantage, doubling the battery life of other phones.
Here you can appreciate the efficiency of Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon SoCs against its Exynos and Kirin competitors. For example, the Galaxy S8+ has a 3,500mAh battery, but is beaten by the 3,300mAh batteries in the LG G6 and Xiaomi Mi 6.
PCMark is one of my favorite tests because it represents a wide variety of common smartphone tasks. Phones that score well in this battery test tend to have the best “real-life” battery life over a typical day of use.
Again, we see strong results from the 5.15-inch Xiaomi Mi 6 and weaker results from popular flagships like the LG G6 and HTC U11. The Galaxy S8+ sits in the middle of the pack with a respectable score.
Compare Phone Size, Battery Life, And More
There is another PCMark battery test that uses the new and more intensive Work 2.0 workload. Although the Pixel XL falls short in a few areas, the overall lineup of phones is pretty much the same.
How much can you play on these flagship phones? GFXBench gives us a good idea, starting with the older and smaller T-Rex test. The results here are mixed, with some unusual external phones like the OnePlus 5 significantly outperforming other phones.
GFXBench Manhattan 3.1 is an extremely intensive test that soaks up battery life and destroys SoCs like nothing. Interestingly, there isn’t necessarily a strong correlation between higher throttle levels and longer battery life. The U11 lasts the longest of the Snapdragon 800 series flagships, but the Xiaomi Mi 6 gasses more and the LG G6 gasses by the same amount.
There are two notable results here: the Exynos-powered Galaxy S8+ and Huawei P10 both throttled significantly, but neither could match the HTC U11 or Xiaomi Mi 6.

The Huawei P10, in particular, falls to the bottom of the chart, despite nearly 50 percent. The GPU in the Kirin 960 is obviously underpowered.

It’s a very simple yet effective test that simulates performance-heavy applications like photo editing and gaming. An infinite number of tests will run in one round until the phone runs out of power. It’s a pretty brutal test and serves as a pretty bad excuse for battery life. The longer the phone can run tests, the better the actual battery life will be.
The final test results are interesting for two reasons. First of all, of the three devices with 5,000 mAh batteries, only one has entered five. Even then it was very close between him and the runners. This shows that battery size alone is not everything. Hardware settings and software upgrades play a big role in the overall picture. For example, Motorola’s Edge Plus finished in tenth place despite having a larger 5,000 mAh battery. This is probably due to the 90Hz display, Snapdragon 865 chipset and possibly less optimized software.
There are some general trends worth noting. The first is that Chinese brands tend to do very well, partly because of their approach to Android. HUAWEI and Xiaomi, for example, are known for powerful software optimizations to extend battery life. So it’s no surprise to see all three of this year’s P40 flagships in our top 10. Second, the best smartphones now offer more than five hours of screen time even under heavy use, which is pretty impressive. All except the OnePlus 8 Pro, whose 120Hz display breaks the four-hour mark.

But all devices in the top six come with a flagship processor. Coming in seventh, the LG Velvet has a mid-range Snapdragon 765G chip and a 60Hz display. Both of these use less power than their competitors, which suggests they should have a higher rating. But in the end, the Velvet ends up inferior to the V60 ThinQ, which shares the same software but packs in a bigger battery. At the end of the day, it’s hard to tell which phones last longer just by looking at a spec sheet.
