Which Grocery Store Has The Best Rotisserie Chicken – In the ever-evolving world of supermarket restaurants that includes sushi, made-to-order burritos, oven pizzas, wine, beer and alcoholic milkshakes, grilled chicken has long been a staple.

And if the throngs of shoppers who crowd around the window when a new batch of chicks arrives are any indication, it’s a fixture that never goes out of style.

Which Grocery Store Has The Best Rotisserie Chicken

Almost every supermarket in downtown New York and beyond carries ready-to-eat rotisserie chicken, so we wanted to know which chicken is the best.

For the sake of consistency, we rated the chickens as normal or as similar as possible to a normal chicken. Included in this ranking were two wholesale clubs in the area – Costco and BJ’s.

The following is based on unannounced visits to stores in Onondaga County. Results are listed in reverse order.

I love Nichols for several reasons: beer specials because they carry Tully’s Honey Mustard and Brooks BBQ Sauce, a childhood favorite of mine. I could go on.

So the disappointment with this chicken stung just a little bit more. At $5.99, it was among the most expensive chickens I’ve tried, and at just over 26 ounces, it was easily the smallest.

Both the white and dark flesh were dry and the skin was pale and clean, saved only by what looked like paprika. Parts of the skin were soggy, probably from the chicken sitting in its juices in the bag indefinitely.

If there’s any consolation for a chicken with an incredibly salty skin, it’s that the breast meat under the skin was nicely seasoned and quite tender. The dark meat was equally tender but slightly saltier, especially the wings, which have the highest skin-to-meat ratio of any cut.

If you’re the type of person who picks the skin off your chicken anyway (I won’t judge you too much), this is the chicken for you.

Leave it to the two wholesale clubs—BJ’s and Costco—to roast the biggest chickens I’ve tried. The package says the chicken weighs three pounds, which means it would be bigger than any traditional supermarket bird, even if the number was accurate.

But this chicken weighed just over 66 ounces — more than four pounds. And at $4.99, this chicken was the cheapest.

The breast meat was nice – a bit dry but very tasty and thanks to the size of the chicken in sufficient quantity. The dark meat was also acceptable, although the thighs – larger than those of smaller birds – were not as tender as others.

It is possible that this chicken sat for a short time because the skin was uniformly wet. Much of the skin was torn from the chest and a large chunk of flesh, including the skin, fell from the top of one of the legs. It looked like someone waiting in the deli had a snack.

All things considered, this chicken isn’t spectacular, but it’s just fine, and if you’re a BJ member looking for a little more bang for your buck from a supermarket grilled chicken, look no further.

The Science Behind The Supermarket Rotisserie Chicken

Picking up rotisserie chicken at the supermarket after work requires both luck and a willingness to wander around the deli section until a fresh piece of chicken comes off the spit.

So you can imagine my horror when, after waiting about 10 or 15 minutes for an empty shelf to be returned, I see several customers rushing to intercept an employee pushing a cart of a dozen chickens before the employee could restock the heated display case.

I did what I had to do and joined the chicken hungry frenzy. Fortunately, other customers were more interested in the lemon pepper or barbecue flavored chickens – including one woman who grabbed three grilled birds to the merciless disdain of her fellow shoppers – leaving me with my choice of chickens.

So what was this chick like? The seasoning was spot on: not salty like Price Chopper chicken, with a bit of sweetness from the honey in the seasoning. The dark meat was soft, but the breast meat – especially the narrower part towards the tail – was dry.

Wegmans deserves credit for being one of the few chickens that includes nutritional information. For those of you curious, three ounces with the skin has 160 calories, 8 g fat and 280 mg sodium. No one but a child is going to eat just three ounces, but it’s always nice to have the information available.

Until now, I had no idea that supermarket grilled chicken could have oily skin. Between the time spent steaming under heat lamps and the juices pooling at the bottom of the package, I felt that was the price you pay for the convenience of ready meals.

This chicken was fresh—I saw the store clerk take this chicken off the spit—and the skin, while not crispy to the chicharon level, cut nicely.

Aside from the chicken, the only other ingredient was the brine, so while the seasoning for this original flavored chicken was simple, the balance was spot on. Not too salty, not bland.

The only downside was the breast meat, which was tasty and complemented by that excellent skin, but a bit dry. However, the dark meat, especially the thigh, was juicy, tender and tasty. If it were a competition for the best chicken legs, this would be the winner.

Let’s start with the skin. Because of the packaging and the cooking time under the heat lamp, this skin was far from crispy. But this skin wasn’t soggy or loose, and thanks to a dose of garlic, lemon, paprika, and other unspecified “spices,” it was very flavorful.

The skin is dark – some would call it burnt, although it wasn’t – but the meat underneath was juicy and quite tender, even the breast, which is always cooked first. The thigh meat fell off the bone, as did the dark meat.

There is definitely a pinch of salt in this bird, but I didn’t find it too much, unlike the salt level of the Price Chopper chicken.

At over 2 1/2 pounds — about 12 ounces more than the listed weight — this bird could easily feed a small family.

Although Nojaim Brothers Grocery on the Near West Side closed last fall after 98 years in business, its family cousin Marcellus is still going strong.

Interestingly, Nojaim’s was the only store where the chickens were not self-serve – you have to ask the deli clerk, who will immediately wrap the chicken in a zip-lock plastic bag to keep it warm during the drive. home

With the chicken sealed in a plastic bag and in a plastic container, I expected the skin to be soggy from all the trapped moisture. But I was wrong! The skin on this chicken was some of the crispiest and tastiest I’ve ever tasted. The skin stuck to the flesh like cooked spaghetti to the wall.

The good start continued with the brisket, which was slightly tough but otherwise juicy and very tender. The dark meat, with a higher skin-to-meat ratio than the breast, was predictably tender and juicy.

My only complaint was that the chicken could have used a little more salt, a phrase rarely uttered when it comes to hot food. It’s a “regular” chicken, of course, but that label was taken a little too literally.

Big M supermarkets were everywhere in Central New York – or all of upstate New York, for that matter. But today there are only a few. In CNY there are locations in Seneca Knolls (town of Van Buren. I visited this location), Oswego and DeRuyter.

If you’ve read this far, you know that skin quality is one of my biggest deciding factors, and this bird skin was one of the best. It wasn’t crumbly crispy (this was No. 3, not No. 1, after all), but the skin had some grip, was well seasoned, held onto the meat, and didn’t slide off.

As for the meat itself, the breast meat was tender and quite moist. Even the narrow end of the breast closest to the legs was juicy. The fattier dark meat was also softer and tastier.

This chicken and the Nojaim Brothers chicken were very similar on the neck and in most respects, but this bird had better seasoning, so Big M wears my bronze medal.

How To Pick The Best Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken

The ovens at Costco are in full view of customers, and if you lean close enough, you can read how many minutes are left until the chickens are ready. With about three minutes left on the timer, I took a seat in the meat section with about six other customers and watched intently as a worker loaded chickens off the spit into plastic containers ready to pounce like murdered crows.
