In 2016, the CEO put demand for the Model Y at 500,000 to 1 million per year. It was four years before the car was put into circulation.

At Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting yesterday, Musk announced that the Tesla Model Y is on track to become the world’s best-selling car. Specifically, the electric SUV will be the world’s best-selling vehicle by revenue this year, and the company expects to become the best-selling vehicle by volume next year after Tesla ramps up production at its Gigafactory Texas and Gigafabrika Berlin.
Tesla does not break down sales between the Model 3 and Model Y, but the latter is expected to outpace the former, with Tesla reporting a capacity of about 300,000 of these vehicles per quarter.
At the Gigafactory in Texas and Berlin, Tesla produces only the Model Y. By the end of the year, Tesla is expected to have the capacity to produce more than one million Model Y vehicles per year.

Of course, these cars are still out of reach for the average buyer, but the price drop could be enough to convince those with more money to buy into Tesla’s ecosystem.
