This is the question people have been asking since the horseless carriage became a mode of transportation: What is the fastest car? As early as 1914, speed hunters were heading to places like the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to find the ultimate answer. Then, leading driver Teddy Tetzlaff drove his customized Benz racing car to 227 km/h in 1914. It was around this time that rules began to be established around the sport of land speed racing.

The most important of these rules, standardized by the L’mobile International Federation (FiA), is that the driver must sprint in one direction, turn and do it again in the opposite direction. The two speeds are then averaged to account for slight variations in wind resistance and road surface.
Bugatti Hits 305 Mph, Breaks Supercar Speed Record
As defined by the FIA, the “World Land Speed Record” is achieved by any wheeled vehicle over 1 mile (1.6 km) in length currently racing under the name Thrust SSC. The car has reached a speed of 763,035 mph (1,227,985 km/h) in October 1997 and has remained unchanged for almost 25 years. The ThrustSSC was also the first recorded land vehicle to break the sound barrier at Mach 1.016.
Looking at this thing, you’d hardly call it a car, would you? It is powered by two large jet engines, so it looks like an airplane without wings. So what is the fastest car you can actually go out and buy? This question is difficult to answer.
In 2017, the 1,400 horsepower Koenigsegg Agera RS took to the Nevada desert and reached an average of 447 km/h. Motorsport data company RaceLogic also confirmed the mileage results. In 2019, Bugatti hit 304 mph (489 km/h) with the Chiron SS. It could hardly be counted on to race, as the car was equipped with non-productive aerodynamic modules specially designed for this 300 mph mark and could only go in one direction.

Top 5 Fastest Production Cars
Maker SSC (no relation to Thrust SSC) went global in 2020 with the new Tuatara hypercar. In a video released by the company, the car appeared to hit 331 mph (532.6 km/h) one-way, with an average two-way speed of 317 mph (510 km/h). However, there were no independent sources to verify the data, and many viewers doubted that the cockpit footage was accurate or otherwise inaccurate.
The SSC also claimed that Guinness World Records officials were there to witness the run, but Guinness later told CNBC that they “were not in any position and it was confirmed by the new record.” There is currently only one Tuatara prototype, although the company says 100 more are in production.
To clear all doubts, SSC has planned another launch soon, this time with Racelogic confirmed. The tuatara then managed to clock an average top speed of 282.9 mph (455 km/h). That’s an impressive number, but still a far cry from SSC’s previous claim. After that, the company promised to break the 300 barrier again soon. In May 2021, Tuatara was in transit to a test site in Florida when its cargo trailer overturned and damaged the vehicle. SSC says the car is in repairable condition and will be back in service in a few weeks, but a third attempt has not been announced at this time.
While few cars can physically go faster, we still consider the Koenigsegg Agera RS to be the fastest production car ever. This is based on the criteria that the company has actually sold multiple road-legal copies of the prospective used car, used the correct two-pass procedure and has an independent data collector in place. It earned the term “the fastest car”. Fresh buzz in recent weeks after the SSC Tuatar set the record for the world’s fastest production car. The 2020 Aston Martin Superleggera is powered by a 715 horsepower twin-turbo engine. Its 5.2-litre V12 produces the glorious exhaust note you’d expect from England’s premier supercar brand. After sprinting to 60 km/h in 3.2 seconds and clearing the quarter mile in 11 seconds, this straight British sports car can hit a not-too-inconsiderable 211 mph.

British car manufacturer McLaren designed the Sienna as its most track-oriented production car. Minimal driver comfort and a lack of sound deadening keep the Senna’s weight low and cabin noise high, while the refined adaptive suspension delivers impressive cornering and fast lap speed. Yes, the Senna is a bit on style, but McLaren engineers point out that the body sculpting is focused on performance and fully functional. Full aerodynamic work and a 789-horsepower twin-turbo V8 allow this supercar to accelerate to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, the quarter mile in 9.9 seconds, and a top speed of 211 mph.
The Ssc Tuatara Might Be World’s Fastest Production Car After Reported Speed Record Attempt
Not every 200 mph supercar has been produced in the 21st century. Let’s take a trip back to the early 1990s when Jaguar launched the world’s fastest production car. Powered by a 542-horsepower turbocharged V6 engine, the Jaguar XJ220 can hit 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, run the quarter mile in 12.4 seconds, and reach a top speed of 212 mph. Those were staggering numbers in 1992, giving the XJ220 the title of fastest production car… until another British automaker stole its thunder a few years later.

Built on a carbon-fiber travel cell, the 720S uses an active suspension system to take full advantage of its 3,200-pound curb weight.
