Shallow chipping to edges of spine and a small loss to upper left edge of spine, approx 1cm long, not affecting text. Cut the bottom loop of the jacket about 1.5 cm long. Light toning endpapers. Sometimes the back pages have very faint stains around the edges. Unwrap the card so that it is whole and intact; clean and clear. Folding postcard 352 p.p. Third book has very minor bumping to edges of binding spine, otherwise sharp. The jacket is slightly toned to the extremities, but fresh, without chips. Light toning and some spotting on FFEP and rear ends. Very faint spotting on edge of text block. Another high-profile item for sale at Sworders is a rare Tudor manuscript dating from 1566, which was designed to help preserve swans during the era when whooper swans belonged to the English crown.
The two-volume manuscript was used by landowners in Norfolk and Suffolk from the 16th to the 19th century.

A favorite delicacy for the banquet table, the swan has been considered a royal bird since the Middle Ages. All free-flying swans in open and common waters were considered the property of the Crown, and only the monarch could grant the privilege of owning swan “game” to individuals or institutions.
All such birds had to be tagged and attached to assist in any ownership disputes or for swan breeding, annual monitoring of new swans being tagged.
The Warden of Swans was appointed both to care for the royal swans and to supervise and regulate the keeping of swans throughout England. He was assisted by deputies responsible for a specific and managed region.
A spokeswoman for Sworders said: “The manuscript refers to the ‘Hundred of Wisbech’ in Norfolk and Suffolk. The first volume, dated 1566, contains over 600 stamps, followed by 19 pages of manuscripts relating to the Swan Laws and Ordinances.

The second volume is dated 1834 and contains notes on swan marks, followed by 84 pages of swan marks and an index of owners.
