Lord Of The Rings: How To Watch Lord Of The Rings In Chronological Or Release Order
Watching the Lord of the Rings movies back-to-back is a fairly simple endeavor, so we’ve put together this article to ensure that newcomers can navigate the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies properly. . In consideration of those new to the series, the following plot synopsis will be spoiler-free.
Below the article, you’ll find a second list that arranges the movies by their original release dates, if you prefer to watch them in that order (like me).
J.R.R. a total of six films were shot. Tolkien’s Middle Earth: The Lord of the Rings and the three Hobbit films. There is also an animated film, The Hobbit, released in 1997, which differs from the newer films. Amazon’s series The Rings of Power is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, in the third century, thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It’s a time in Middle-earth where we’ll see “The Fellowship of the Ring, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic saga of Númenor, and the final union of Elves and Men,” says showrunner J.D. How To Watch The Lord Of The Rings Movies In Order
The only potential confusion in The Lord of the Rings-The Hobbit chronology is that The Hobbit trilogy is set 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, even though it was released ten years later.
Chronologically, the story begins with the 2012 film The Hobbit: The Journey to Expect, where Martin Freeman portrays Bilbo Baggins Jr. (played by Ian Holm in the LotR trilogy). The conflict with Smaug is resolved, and the film’s titular battle involves the armies of two tribes of men, elves, and orcs. We’re getting vague here because The Battle of the Five Armies is full of resolutions (and spoilers for that matter), but get ready for a heavy action movie that ends where The Lord of the Rings trilogy begins. The Shire, 60 years later, when Gandalf visits Bilbo on his 111th birthday.
Sauron’s History In Middle Earth, Explained
The first Middle-earth film by release date (and the fourth in a row) is 2001’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The future shifts from Bilbo to his much younger cousin Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood). After the exposition that defines the situation in Middle-earth, we return to celebrate Bilbo’s 111th birthday in the Shire.

The New Lord Of The Rings Prequel, The Rings Of Power, Is Set In The Second Age Of Middle Earth
A treacherous journey leads them to Lothlorien, an elven kingdom ruled by Cate Blanchett Galadriel, who also appears in The Hobbit trilogy and is one of the main characters of the new Amazon series (this younger version of Galadriel is played by Morphy Clarke). Galadriel advises Frodo and he decides to continue his journey to Mordor without the others, taking only Sam, his most trusted confidant.
Frodo and Sam meet a third, reluctant traveling companion in Gollum (voice of Andy Serkis), a hobbit long corrupted by the power of the One Ring. The trio make it to the edge of Mordor, but are stopped by an unexpected intervention. Other members of the Fellowship are engaged in a rescue mission; Gandalf takes a new form; And the first epic battle of the trilogy takes place in the abyss of the depths of Dilge.
Aside from the Battle of the Five Armies, the plot of Return of the Kings is largely spoiler-y, so we’ll only mention the biggest events. Gollum uses the ring’s influence to turn Frodo against Sam and leads the former to the lair of his mortal enemy. The other members of the Fellowship, meanwhile, take part in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields – a massive, final battle against Sauron’s dark forces.
Eventually, Frodo and Sam enter Mordor in disguise and see the original plan with the help of the other members of the Fellowship. With the end of the journey, we enter the fourth age of Middle-earth and end with a bittersweet ending.
