Which Smartphone Has The Best Battery Life – Even before thinner designs and faster processors, battery life is one of the main features most consumers want to upgrade to in their new phones. Ironically, longer battery life doesn’t really sell more phones, while other more visible features certainly do. To be fair, of the dozens of phones we’ve tested over the past two years, very few have had terrible battery performance. But what is great and what isn’t in today’s market?

For this article, we’ll be looking at over 500 hours of battery life testing across 12 tests to make sure we have the best picture of how the current generation phone performs. Basically every high-end Android phone we’ve reviewed in the last 12+ months is on the test bench today. We haven’t been able to test every phone on the market, but we have

All the big guns are covered, including the Samsung Galaxy S8+, LG G6, HTC U11, Huawei P10, OnePlus 5, Google Pixel XL and more. All the phones we test are currently available for purchase, starting at $400 and up.

It’s worth mentioning that each phone was tested the same way, under the same conditions. There is no subjective opinion or application here; We’ve tested every phone repeatedly, collected the numbers, and put them in easy-to-read charts for your viewing pleasure.

We have two web browsing tests we ran on Wi-Fi, and the results above are the more extreme of the two.

Around five hours of performance seems to be where phones like the OnePlus 5 and LG G6 sit. Like most tests, it favors larger batteries and smaller displays, which is why the Xiaomi Mi 6 performs better.

Bigger phones — those with 5.5-inch or larger displays — that don’t opt for larger-than-average batteries fall below. The end result is that choosing something like the Xiaomi Mi 6 over the OnePlus 5 will give you 85% more battery life.

Our second Wi-Fi browsing test is less intense and better reflects “real-world” Internet browsing situations. There’s a bit of a shuffle at the top end, with the Mate 9 taking the lead over the Mi 6, though devices like the LG G6 and HTC U11 are still far below. The average result in this test is around eight hours, so phones like the G6 don’t hold up well.

Switching from Wi-Fi to 4G LTE in the same test negatively affects the battery life of all phones in our test group, except for the Huawei P10, which remains at the same level as its Wi-Fi results. The general order of performance of the phone is the same.

Average battery life drops by 16% when switching from Wi-Fi to LTE. If you think you’re saving battery by disabling Wi-Fi for data transfer, think again.

The Exynos Galaxy S8+ dropped the most, 27%, while Snapdragon chips dropped 19 to 24 percent. This supports most reports that suggest the built-in modems in Snapdragon SoCs are more efficient than their Exynos counterparts.

The last browser test we ran was Basemark Web 3.0, a processor-intensive workload that pushed the phones to their limits on CPU and GPU. The Moto Z2 Play wins here because it doesn’t have a high-end SoC, despite the $500 price tag; The Snapdragon 626 instead utilizes its lower performance, so the power consumption drops to its advantage, more than doubling the battery life of some other phones.

Here you can appreciate the efficiency of high-end Snapdragon SoCs compared to Qualcomm’s Exynos and Kirin rivals. For example, the Galaxy S8+ has a 3,500 mAh battery, while the LG G6 and Xiaomi Mi 6 batteries are around 3,300 mAh.

PCMark is one of my favorite tests because it represents a wide variety of common smartphone tasks. Phones that score well on this battery test will have the best “real-world” battery life over a day of normal use.

Again we see a strong result on the 5.15-inch Xiaomi Mi 6 and weaker results on better known flagships like the LG G6 and HTC U11. The Galaxy S8+ sits in the middle of the pack with a respectable result.

Another PCMark battery test is available that uses the new and more intensive 2.0 workload. The overall order of the phones is pretty much the same, although the Pixel XL has dropped a few places.

How long can you play with these top phones? GFXBench will give us a good idea, starting with the older, less intense T-Rex test. The results here are mixed, with some odd outliers like the OnePlus 5 outperforming other handsets.

GFXBench Manhattan 3.1 is a more intensive test that drains battery life and fuels SoCs like nothing else. Interestingly, there isn’t necessarily a strong correlation between higher levels of throttling and longer battery life. The U11 is the longest-lasting of the Snapdragon 800-series flagships, although the Xiaomi Mi 6 packs more gas and the LG G6 packs the same amount of gas.

There are two notable results here: the Exynos-powered Galaxy S8 + and Huawei P10, both of which have plenty of gas, but can’t match the HTC U11 or the Xiaomi Mi 6.

Especially on gas the Huawei P10 isn’t nearly 50 percent, but it’s at the bottom of the chart. It’s clear that the Kirin 960’s GPU is underpowered.

We’ve tested all the smartphones in 2023 to find out which one has the longest and best battery life.

Deciding which smartphone to buy is not an easy task. We all need a high-performance phone with a capable camera for our Instagram snaps, but smartphone battery life is an important factor. No matter how great your new phone is, it’s not much use to anyone if you have to constantly charge it.

Best Phone Battery Life In 2023: The Longest Lasting Phones

When making your decision, it’s best to look at the battery size (measured in mAh) to give you an indication of how long the phone should last. But other factors like display size and resolution and power efficiency still play a big role. But there’s no need to guess – we’ve got you covered when it comes to phones with the best battery life.

Every phone that comes through our doors faces our in-house battery life test. As such, we know exactly which phone you should consider if battery life is at the top of your agenda. We’ve ranked the 20 best battery life phones of 2023 below, including these pricey flagships and forgettable budget alternatives.

To see how your phone stacks up against its competitors, we’ve combined all the battery scores from the countless smartphone tests we run each year into one easy-to-use graph, so you can see which phones have the best battery performance.

To measure a smartphone’s battery life, we run a continuous video playback test. The video file includes a handful of scenes from Spider-Man 2, encoded in H.264 and looped for 20 hours. We use the VLC video player app on Google Play or Apple App Store to play the file and record the played time on reboot. We put the phone in airplane mode, turn off any automatic brightness and sleep settings, and set the screen brightness to a standard 170cd/m2.

Best Phones For Battery Life

Airplane mode turns off all of the phone’s wireless features — naturally, increasing battery life — meaning our tests are repeatable and consistent. The big problem with wireless is that signal strength can come and go, forcing the phone to constantly adjust the amount of power it’s using, producing variable results.

As you can see in the graph below, despite a slight stagnation in recent years, smartphone battery life has improved rapidly. All 20 phones in our range reached more than 23 hours on our battery benchmark before needing to be recharged, and a significant portion of the latest headsets (and many on the list) outlasted their predecessors. .

This includes the Samsung Galaxy M31, which knocked previous winner Lenovo P2 off the top of the podium. Lasting more than 30 hours in our battery test, the Galaxy M31 beat the Lenovo P2 by more than 90 minutes under the same conditions, making it the first phone we can recommend with a better two-day battery life.

This is the standard for all upcoming smartphones. In second place is the Sony Xperia 10 IV, which is ahead of its predecessor (now in third place), coming in at 29 hours and 36 minutes. Realme 9 4G makes its first appearance
