That’s faster than the Bugatti Chiron, the world’s fastest car, which takes 2.5 seconds to go from zero to 60. Tesla engineers have been working for years to reduce the acceleration time of the Model S Performance by tenths of a second. So what makes it so good that it accelerates so quickly?
Tesla Model S Plaid First Test: 0–60 Mph In 1.98 Seconds*!
First, electric vehicles will always be more efficient than traditional internal combustion engine cars. And the more efficient the car, the better it performs. Gas-powered cars contain thousands of components that connect different mechanical parts to transfer power from the engine to the wheels. To do this, the engine sends energy to the transmission, which converts this energy into usable energy through gears, clutches, and various electrical components before sending it to the drive shaft, which ultimately turns the wheels. At every point in the process, energy is lost due to the friction of the various moving parts. Electric cars are lighter in part because they can accelerate from zero to top speed without shifting a single gear. Because electric vehicles don’t need to shift gears, all the torque they produce is available from zero rpm. This is called instantaneous torque.
Narrator: But let’s take a step back and talk about where that power comes from. Battery. Electric vehicle batteries range from about 20 kilowatt hours to 100 kilowatt hours. This number indicates how much energy the battery can store, also known as energy density. The 100-kilowatt-hour battery in the Model S Performance produces 762 horsepower, comparable to that of the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, but the battery’s power density determines how much power the electric motor can deliver per second. The higher the power density, the faster the car can accelerate. Tesla declined to share the exact energy density of the batteries, but a quick look at how the Model S Performance compares to other electric vehicles reveals that it’s one of the most energy-dense batteries in an electric car. But power isn’t everything. A car can only accelerate as fast as the tires stick to the road.
Adhesion is one of the most important factors in racing. If the tires don’t stick to the road, your car won’t go anywhere. The Tesla incorporates three elements commonly found in other high-performance cars to maximize the grip between the tires and the road, allowing the car to accelerate more efficiently. The first is all-wheel drive. Two electric motors at the front and rear of the car deliver power to all four wheels at the same time, which naturally increases traction. Then there’s torque vectoring. Tesla’s software measures how well each tire grips the road and independently adjusts torque at the front and rear hundreds of times per second to ensure the tires always have maximum grip and push the car forward. Finally, Tesla uses a tire whose tread has been specially developed for maximum contact with the ground.
So far, the Model S Performance has everything but Tesla’s battery technology found in other performance cars or electric vehicles. Together, these features propel the Model S from zero to 60 in 3.7 seconds, putting it on par with the Alfa Romeo Giulia or the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, both impressive performance cars. But the not-so-secret sauce that pushes the Model S into supercar performance and shaves off an extra 1.3 seconds is Ludicrous Plus mode and launch control.

Ludicrous Plus mode charges the battery for maximum performance by heating it to exactly 122 degrees, improving performance by about 46 horsepower, according to DragTimes’ latest test of the latest firmware update. Engines, converters and transmissions can withstand higher temperatures for longer before the car limits power to cool the car’s components, allowing the car to last longer in demanding driving such as drag racing. With launch control, the front suspension tilts into a cheetah position to provide more even performance to the front tires and further improve traction. The shaft is also preloaded with a small amount of torque, similar to retracting a belt, to create tension before firing the projectile. But in this case, the projectile is a car.
Model S’s incredible performance can’t be attributed to a single attribute. Instead, it’s a system that maximizes performance and efficiency at every stage.

While the next-generation Roadster won’t be cheap, it will be much cheaper than all the fastest supercars in the world. The standard Tesla Roadster aims to hit 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, which is pretty ridiculous. As Tesla CEO Elon Musk said of the upcoming Model S Plaid, it’s “so good,” and it’s 1.99 seconds, at least as far as we know at the time of writing. We hope to find out more at the delivery event on June 10th.
Opt for the SpaceX Edition Roadster and Tesla says the car will accelerate (literally, depending on the definition) to 60 mph in just 1.1 seconds. Looking at the graph above, 1.9 seconds already leads with a significant advantage in terms of race times. If the Tesla can go 1.1 seconds, it will knock off the next fastest car by a full second at 60 mph.
