Director Peter Jackson announced yesterday that British actor Martin Freeman will star as Bilbo Baggins. Freeman is best known to Americans for playing Tim Canterbury in the British version of “The Office.” The character Tim, a mild-mannered salesman who is aware of the futility of his job, is Jim Halpert’s U.K. version is

Martin Freeman: ‘the Hobbit’ Is Bigger Than You Are

Freeman at least looks the part of Bilbo: boyish, polite, short with a decidedly British expression. But “Hobbit” fans are wondering if Freeman can handle the dramatic film. He was at ease starring in the underrated “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and proved more capable with brief cameos in “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and “Love Actually.” But it, like “The Office”, is a comedy. Falling in love with a receptionist is one thing; Fighting goblins, goblins and giant spiders is another.

Jackson, the project’s mastermind, isn’t worried. “There are times in your career when you meet an actor who you know was born to play a role, but it happened as soon as I met Martin,” the director said in a statement. CS Monitor thinks Freeman is “the perfect Bilbo Baggins”. The Washington Post says he will be fine.

Here’s a scene from the second season finale of “The Office.” It’s dramatic, sad and funny at the same time. Maybe Freeman is the right choice.

For younger moviegoers, he is known to some for his role as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. (In The Hobbit, Holm played an older Bilbo, while Martin Freeman played a younger version.) But Bilbo had his first J.R.R. Tolkien’s role, or rather his first Baggins. In 1981 he voiced Frodo Baggins in the BBC radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.

Many sci-fi movie fans remember him from the chilling 1979 film Alien. Holm played Ash, the science officer on the doomed Nostromo who turns out to be an android with orders to bring back the deadly aliens even if the human crew has to be sacrificed. And still others know him best for his BAFTA Award-winning and Oscar-nominated role as coach Sam Musabini in 1981’s Chariots of Fire.

Holm won a Tony Award in 1967 for his portrayal of Lennie in playwright Harold Pinter’s The Homecoming and a Laurence Olivier Award in 1998 for his portrayal of King Lear. Other roles in his varied career include Father Vito Cornelius in 1997’s The Fifth Element, Chief Skinner in the 2007 animated film Ratatouille, and several appearances as French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte.

“I’ve always been a minimalist,” Holm once said of acting. “It was Bogart who once said, ‘If you think the right thoughts, the camera will catch them.’ The most important part of the face is the eyes, and if you can make the eyes speak, you’re halfway there.”

Martin Freeman Takes His Own Great And Terrible Journey As Bilbo Baggins In “the Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”

Fans, including many famous filmmakers and actors as well as Holm’s co-stars, remembered her on social media. Elijah Wood, who played Bilbo from Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings films, wrote: “So sad to hear of the passing of the outstanding, brilliant and dynamic Sir Ian Holm. Farewell, Uncle.”

And Dominic Monaghan, who played Mary in the Lord of the Rings films, wrote: “To the gray sky goes the beloved Ian Holm. Pete Jackson said he was the best actor he ever worked with. I played him when I could.” Studied. Set and shut it, he was a magical man. So cute. So brilliant. So good in all of them. Namri uncle Bilbo xoxo.” (Namárië means “farewell” in Kenya, the language used in The Lord of the Rings.)

One of his lines for harassing reporters by offering my body as a shell to Ian Holm mentioned his role as Bilbo Baggins.— Rob Delaney (@RobDelaney) June 19, 2020 He has made a name for himself on BBC TV shows as “ The Office” and Arthur Dent starred in “Sherlock” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” But now actor Martin Freeman has landed his biggest role yet as Bilbo Baggins in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” The character was previously Peter Jackson portrayed by Ian Holm in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but Freeman now has the privilege of playing Bilbo in a film set sixty years before the beginning of that trilogy.

When it comes to portraying a character played by a well-known actor in previous films, the task seems quite daunting. Any actor in this position usually faces a shadow hanging over them as their performance will always be compared to the previous one. However, Holm’s Bilbo did more of a cameo in the “Lord of the Rings” films as he was only there for a short time. Additionally, Freeman makes this role his own as he takes Bilbo from someone who is only willing to risk his life to help others while minding his own business. Still, one has to wonder if Freeman spent much time studying Holm’s work in previous films. He eventually cleared it up with Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub of the Collider website.

Ian Holm, Star Of Lord Of The Rings, Alien And Chariots Of Fire, Dies Aged 88

“I’ve watched the footage again, obviously in more detail before I started this. I saw more of Ian’s (performance) when I needed to. Again, I don’t really know how much to say, but there were points where it was relevant for me to look at Ian’s performance very carefully,” Freeman told Weintraub. “But in general, no because I think we’re so good. I know why I was thrown; you know what I mean? Because I think we are not that different. , physically or whatever. I think if I was, I don’t know, Jeff Goldblum or somebody, I’d probably think right, hold on, if he’s older than me, I’d probably be more interested in something else.. Well, start. But no, because I think I’ve always believed that.”

“What I was told, which I think was a compliment, and perhaps a slur, is that you’re the only one who plays it. therefore,
